Book Review - Worth the Risk (St. James Book 3) by Jamie Beck

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Jackson St. James decided that six weeks in Vermont’s Green Mountains would help him get his life together, he didn’t anticipate replacing his craving for whiskey with a craving for his alluring new landlord, Gabby. Now, instead of prioritizing his sobriety and the resolution of the lawsuit threatening his business, he’s making excuses to spend time with the spunky young landscaper whose candor is more than a little addictive.
Gabby Bouchard refuses to let her pill-popping mother and unreliable baby daddy turn her into a cynic, so she doesn’t fight her attraction to her enigmatic new tenant. Although Jackson’s smile rarely reaches his eyes, his generosity and dependability make her willing to overlook his demons. But once she convinces him to give in to temptation, Gabby’s jealous ex threatens to disrupt the life she has built for herself and her son.
With so much at stake, Gabby and Jackson must decide if love is worth the risk.

REVIEW

Jamie Beck writes great emotional stories and Worth the Risk is no exception.  Jackson's story was the one that called to me the most it is obvious from the very beginning that he damaged and not quite ready to face it, but still a good person.  Books so often put characters in boxes, such as "mean alcoholic" or a character who has hit rock bottom before they can see they need help.  Jackson isn't quite at the bottom, and he isn't a terrible person, but he does have flaws.  Pairing him with Gabby, who is the daughter of an alcoholic and drug attic who did hit rock bottom and was mean, made for a great story and conflict and was well done by Beck.

Overall I recommend this story to anyone who loves a good romance.  Beck does a great job of tackling serious topics while still keeping it somewhat light and optimistic.

Anything is possible on Gansett Island, especially true love.

Review

Usually, I love visiting Gansett in the summer for some beach reading, but as it turns out Gansett in the winter is pretty nice too!  It makes me dream about the summer and in this case the "Summer of Mallory!"  Of course, no summer all about yourself is complete without a little romance, and it finds her almost immediately.  I don't want to give away WHO the romance is with, Marie keeps you guessing a little at the beginning as the men start lining up, but as always the story is done well and the characters are smart and fun.  The romance is steamy at times, but tame compared to some of the past books, the perfect amount for these characters.

Book Review - Holiday with Twist by Shannon Stacey

ABOUT THE BOOK

New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey celebrates the season in this brand-new holiday novella
After a messy breakup, Leigh Holloway is ready to start her life over. Until her parents put the family home on the market and call her back for one final, memory-making Christmas. The last thing she wants to do is deprive her mom of the perfect holiday, so she'll lie her way through the visit and worry about her future in the New Year. Too bad the only bar in town is owned by a guy she seriously wronged in high school.
Leigh's best friend broke Croy Dawson's heart, and Croy knows it was Leigh's fault. They've never liked each other, but Croy isn't cruel: he'd never turn away a pretty woman in need of some family-Christmas fortification. He doesn't expect her to drink just enough candy-cane martinis to tell him her secrets—and he definitely doesn't expect to get caught up in her holiday madness.
Despite the surprising love and laughter, Croy and Leigh can't escape the truth: he can't walk away from his family obligations and she has a life and career to reboot. But anything is possible if your holiday comes with a twist…

REVIEW

I think that Shannon Stacey does a great job creating a full story in the novella form, something I think is very rarely done well.  While the story felt slightly rushed at first, things immediately become clear based on the history the characters have together.  From the first scene in the bar where Leight orders her cocktail, through the end the story moves quickly and easily and feels like a natural pace for this story.  This was a sweet and easy holiday read and I recommend it for anyone looking to get into the spirit of the season.

Book Review - Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner

ABOUT THE BOOK

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner brings to life an irresistibly funny and relatable heroine in the novel The Boston Globe called “funny, fanciful, extremely poignant, and rich with insight.”

For twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along nicely for Cannie Shapiro. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her friends, her rat terrier, Nifkin, and her job as pop culture reporter for The Philadelphia Examiner. She’s even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body.

But the day she opens up a national women’s magazine and sees the words “Loving a Larger Woman” above her ex-boyfriend’s byline, Cannie is plunged into misery…and the most amazing year of her life. From Philadelphia to Hollywood and back home again, she charts a new course for herself: mourning her losses, facing her past, and figuring out who she is and who she can become.

REVIEW

This book isn't a Romantic Comedy.  If that is what you are looking for, read something by Catherine Bybee or if you want something really light-hearted, Janet Evanovich.  Both of those authors are great and write wonderful characters with happily-ever-afters and drama that wraps up nicely.  This book isn't quite like that.  The characters are realistic and possibly too realistic for some audiences who are looking for lighter women's lit.  They aren't perfect.  Sometimes they are a little whiney.  Sometimes they are a little selfish.  And all the time they are very real.  The story mostly follows Cannie through her struggles the year following the break-up of a serious relationship.  The story hits all of the plot points of a romance novel, but the story also gets a lot more real and a lot grittier than many readers are used to.  This is one of the reasons I loved this book but I feel like I need to warn off possible readers who will not love this book for the same reasons.  I get it.  Sometimes I want to read fluff because real life sucks and I don't need to read about other girls who lives suck too.  I think this book is worth it because the story is great, the character is complex, and the message it leaves you with will stick with you well after you finish the book.

Book Review - It Had to Be Them by Tamra Buamann - Free on Kindle Unlimited

ABOUT THE BOOK

Kline Grant has traveled the world for more than a decade to avoid going back home—and to make sure she doesn’t see Ben, her former fiancé. But her mother’s recent health troubles make it impossible for Kline to stay away. She plans to check on her mom, avoid Ben, and then get back on the road again. But the quirky town locals of Anderson Butte, a private little celebrity hideaway in the picturesque mountains of Colorado, have a very different plan.
Ben Anderson, the town’s handsome and beloved doctor, once broke Kline’s heart for reasons he’s never explained. When he figures out her mother’s scheme to trick her into coming home, he enlists the meddling townspeople’s help to make things right again with Kline. Then Ben plans to win her back. But as the former flames come face-to-face, old wounds ache, hurtful secrets emerge, and sparks fly with the heat between them that’s never cooled. Will the truth be enough to heal two broken hearts, or will it keep them apart forever?

REVIEW

Easy to ready second chance romance.  I've loved this series and the Anderson family so far, and while this wasn't my favorite, the book was still good and up to the standards set by Baumann.  She does a great job of making Ben and Kline real characters with flaws and quirks that make them human and relatable.  She paints a picture of small-town life that feels realistic to a city girl and at the same time a little off-beat.  I recommend this to anyone looking to get away for a few hours and enjoy a quick easy read with some relatable characters.

Besides reading, I like to travel and have fun adventures with my family. I’m addicted to all of Bravo’s Housewives reality shows because certain traits of those women make for great characters in my books. It’s just an added bonus to live vicariously in their closets. And I love to see the singers on The Voice living their dreams. I’ve always been tempted to apply to be a contestant on Survivor, but I chicken out every time I get to the application part. I really like to be clean, sleep on something soft at night, hate bugs and I enjoy having at least two meals a day. I wouldn’t last a week on that show.

Book Review - The Bachelor Audtion by Rachel Van Dyken

ABOUT THE BOOK

Jane isn't entirely sure that Cinderella got such a raw deal. Sure, she had a rough start, but didn't she eventually land a prince and a happily-ever-after? Meanwhile, Jane is busy waiting on her demanding, entitled sisters, running her cleaning business, and . . . yep, not a prince in sight. Until a party and a broken shoe incident leave Jane wondering if princes---or at least, a certain deliciously hunky billionaire---maybe do exist.

Except Brock Wellington isn't anyone's dream guy. Hell, a prince would never agree to be auctioned off in marriage to the highest bidder. Or act like an arrogant jerk---even if it was just a façade. Now, as Brock is waiting for the auction chopping block, he figures it's karmic retribution that he's tempted by a sexy, sassy woman he can't have. But while they can't have a fairy-tale ending, maybe they can indulge in a little bit of fantasy . . .

REVIEW

Rachel Van Dyken writes characters amazingly well.  She finds the perfect balance between over-the-top characters and human characters, somehow finding the sweet spot that makes them feel real while still being a bit absurd.  She owns the obvious Cinderella parody and makes it her own in a cute and light-hearted take that has her unique charm throughout.  I recommend to anyone who loves a good rom-con and for any fans of Rachel Van Dyken's books.

Book Review - Uncontrollable (A Country Roads Novel) by Shannon Richard

ABOUT THE BOOK

THE THIN LINE BETWEEN LOATHING . . . AND LUST

It's been a tough year for Beth Boone. She's lost the person she cared about the most: her big sister. But Beth isn't grieving alone. She's now guardian to her sister's three children and though she loves them fiercely, so far she's not exactly winning at parenting. In this noisy, peanut-butter-everywhere chaos, there is no calm. None. So Beth has zero patience with the infuriating guy next door-not to mention his destruct-o "puppy"-wreaking more havoc in her life.

Except that Tripp Black is all muscles, deep brown eyes, and lips that promise way-too-delicious things. Every time Tripp and Beth confront each other, there's an undercurrent of red-hot sexual tension, one that threatens to break down all her carefully constructed walls. She's been burned before, and Tripp is a self-proclaimed bachelor for life. There's no way that Beth's too-hot-neighbor-from-hell could ever be the man for her-until their uncontrollable attraction becomes so much more . . .

REVIEW

What a great book in a great series.  There just isn't much  more to say than that.  Shannon Richard does a great job of capturing great characters and putting together a fun story about two people who start as enemies and quickly learn that hate is something more.  There is so much more going on in this story than just a fun sexy romance though.  This is a story about friendship and family and overcoming tragedy and what being a hero and being a good person is all about.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shannon Richard grew up in the Panhandle of Florida as the baby sister of two overly protective but loving brothers. She was raised by a more than somewhat eccentric mother, a self-proclaimed vocabularist who showed her how to get lost in a book, and a father who passed on his love for coffee and really loud music. She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s in English literature and still lives in Tallahassee, where she battles everyday life with writing, reading, and a rant every once in a while. Okay, so the rants might happen on a regular basis. She’s still waiting for her Southern, scruffy Mr. Darcy, and in the meantime writes love stories to indulge her overactive imagination. Oh, and she’s a pretty big fan of the whimsy.

Book Review - To Love and CHerish by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sex and the City meets The Wedding Planner in The Wedding Belles, a contemporary and witty romance series about three high-powered New York City women who can plan any wedding—but their own.

Alexis Morgan has spent the past eight years devoted to turning her tiny start-up into Manhattan’s premiere wedding planning company, The Wedding Belles. Now that her business is thriving, it’s time to turn towards her much neglected personal life, and Alexis approaches her relationships like she does everything else: with a plan. Not a part of that plan is Logan Harris, the silent partner in the Belles, and the one person who’s been there for her since the very beginning. But Alexis needs someone fun, and Logan’s all business, all the time—except when a late night at the office ends with an unexpected kiss that leaves the usually cool and together Alexis reeling.

Logan has lusted after Alexis since the day he walked into the tiny Harlem apartment that used to double as her office. But the ambitious wedding planner has always been untouchable...until now. Alexis has made it clear that she’s on the dating market—and equally clear that he’s not in the running. But when Alexis finds herself in need of a date for her sister’s last minute wedding in Florida, Logan knows it’s the perfect time to show Alexis that there’s more to him than numbers and spreadsheets—and beneath the pinstripes and glasses lies a hot-blooded heartthrob. As Florida’s sultry days turn into even hotter nights, Logan’s out to convince Alexis that the fling of a lifetime could just maybe turn into forever...

REVIEW

Alexis and Logan are the kind of characters that stick with you well after you finish the book.  Like it seems many other readers, I've been waiting for their story since these two characters were introduced in the first book of the series, and was excited to finally see the resolution.  I wasn't at all disappointed.  There is so much emotion and passion wrapped up in this story, I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to get wrapped up in and be taken on a journey and trust that they are in good hands with an author who will take care of them.

Lucy Albright never wanted her family’s Texas ranch, but now it’s in foreclosure. She’s already lost so much she can’t bear the thought of losing one more thing. Book Review - Not Quite Perfect by Catherine Bybee

ABOUT THE BOOK

New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Catherine Bybee delivers the fifth heartwarming, flirty novel in the wildly popular Not Quite series.
Mary Kildare knows how to read people. It’s both why she makes a great therapist and why she refuses to trust the average bachelor. Staying fiercely independent has been her primary relationship strategy—until wealthy playboy pilot (and commitmentphobe) Glen Fairchild reappears in her life. After a yearlong teasing tug-of-war, Mary and Glen test the waters of attraction, only to find that their physical chemistry runs deeper than flirtation.
At first, a bicoastal romance suits them both—especially since Glen can swoop in and whisk Mary away on one of his company’s planes. But no matter how close they get, they’re still three thousand miles apart. And when Mary’s life is threatened, Glen realizes the one luxury he doesn’t have is time. Can he close the distance between them before it’s too late?

REVIEW

As always, this was a great read by Catherine Bybee.  The chemistry between Glen and Mary was sizzling.  Bybee does a great job of adding a backdrop of suspense to a great romance with plenty of humor and spice in between.  I read a lot of romance and Bybee is able to create something a little different every time that makes her stories stand out from everything else in the genre.  I cannot say enough good things about this book or about Catherine Bybee’s writing.  If you love romance and good writing, read this book.

Book Review - May the Best Man Win by Mira Lyn Kelly

ABOUT THE BOOK

An Amazon Best Book of the Month!
Four friends
Each a Best Man at a wedding
One chance to get it right
Jase Foster can't believe his bad luck. He's been paired with the she-devil herself for his best friend's wedding: Emily Klein of the miles-long legs and killer smile. She may be sin in a bridesmaid dress, but there's no way he's falling for her again.
They can barely stand each other, but given how many of their friends are getting married, they'll just have to play nice-at least when they're in company. Once they're alone, more than just gloves come off as Jase and Emily discover their chemistry is combustible, and there may be something to this enemies to lovers thing after all...

REVIEW

This is one of those books that stuck with me for a couple of days after I read it.  On the surface it should have been a really light, almost too many coincidences to handle, forgettable romance.  But it wasn't.  I found myself telling my husband about these characters and he was doing the obligatory husband eye roll, because lets face it... trying to explain the plot to this story to him does seem a bit absurd.  Which is when it became obvious that it wasn't the story that was so compelling, but the characters that really got me.  This isn't a friends become lovers story.  This isn't exactly an enemies become lovers story either.  It is just a story about two people who have such strong chemistry that no set of circumstances are going to keep them apart no matter how hard they try.   These characters were easy to relate to because they are real and make real mistakes and have real pasts.

Kelly has built a world that I am very much looking forward to reading more books in.  While I obviously connected with Jase and Emily, the secondary characters were also engaging and interesting as well.

Blog Post - The Last Kiss of Summer - By Marina Adair

ABOUT THE BOOK

He's one bad apple she just can't resist . . .

Kennedy Sinclair never dreamed she'd own a pie shop and an orchard in a small town like Destiny Bay. But nestled between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, it's the perfect place to cross something off her "Life's short so eat the icing first" list and start her life over from scratch. Her shop, Sweetie Pies, is famous for its hot, flaky apple turnovers and sinfully delicious deep dish pie. For Kennedy though, nothing is more enticing than the tall, strapping slice of temptation who keeps coming back for more.

Luke Callahan is determined to make his hard cider business a success. With his beloved father's cider recipe and the opportunity of a lifetime in his grasp, he'll stop at nothing to get this deal done. There's just one catch: he needs Kennedy's apples. At first, he thinks it'll be as easy as pie to charm those apples right off her trees. But Kennedy isn't falling for his tender charms or his wicked ways. When the negotiations start heating up, so do the feelings they have for each other. And it takes just one kiss to seal the deal . . .

REVIEW

At first I wasn't so sure about this book.  Would Kennedy really leave her job as an Accountant to bake?  And if he'd been an accountant, would she have overlooked something as obvious as where the apples were coming from??  But it quickly became easy to overlook that as I came to know Kennedy and Luke.  Kennedy's passion for everything was almost as enchanting to me as it was to Luke.  Watching Luke try and resist Kennedy and believe he stood a chance was almost comical, knowing inevitably what would happen.  The charisma between these two was magic from the beginning.  Well done Marina Adair.

Book Review - Montana Rescue by Kim Law - Free on Kindle Unlimited

ABOUT THE BOOK

Championship bull rider Nick Wilde is the face of Montana Pro Rodeo, with all the acclaim and fans he can handle. But is that enough? Contemplating his next career move, he’s come home to his family’s cherry orchard—and to his childhood crush, helicopter pilot Harper Stone. But Harper’s not quite the sexy, badass girl he once lusted after. Recently widowed, she’s broken in two. Wanting to help her move on, Nick finds himself aching for the kind of stability he never had as a child.
True love comes once if you’re lucky, and Harper already had her shot. An accident took her husband eighteen months ago and left only pain and guilt in his place. Now Nick is waking up her body and heart to everything she might still have to gain…or lose. A second chance is more than she thinks she deserves. But with a man like Nick doing the persuading, maybe it’s time to try.

REVIEW

One of the things I love about Kim Laws writing is that she tackles complicated topics.  The Wilde family is the definition of complicated.  It is often difficult to write in these tough areas in the romance genre because the expectation is that in the end, the guy gets the girl, and everyone lives happily ever after.  Law still manages to live up to that promise while still staying true to the complicated world she has built in her stories and the complicated charters she has created.

In Montana Rescue, Harper is possibly even more broken than Nick, but are in very different places in their paths towards recovering.  This story of strength and friendship and chemistry is well written and is an quick read, but not always easy.  It asks hard questions sometimes and could hit home with the reader at times for anyone who didn't always live in a perfect home or lives in a home that always appeared a little more perfect on the outside than on the inside.  This story is just as much as about characters as it is about romance, which is why I always look forward to Kim Laws books and I recommend it to anyway who enjoys a good character driven story.

Book Review - For Better or Worse by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

In For Better or Worsethe sexy second novel in USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne’s irresistible new series, an up-and-comer Wedding Belle butts heads with the literal guy next door. Will their brewing tension boil over into something more?

He’s driving her insane . . .

When small-town girl Heather Fowler finally gets promoted from elite Wedding Belles assistant to full-fledged planner, she’s determined to put her best foot forward. Unfortunately, her first celebrity client demands an opulent black-tie affair at the Plaza…in three months. Heather’s days become a flurry of cake tastings, dress fittings, RSVP cards, and bridal tantrums. But what she’s really losing sleep over is the live music blaring from her playboy neighbor’s apartment all night. Heather vows to put this entitled man-child in his place, whether he likes it or not.

But a little crazy might be just what she needs.

Five years ago, Josh Tanner was a young rising star on Wall Street, complete with the penthouse and the migraines. But a grim cancer diagnosis made him realize there’s more to life than the corner office. He kicked the cancer and dedicated his life to following his passions; now, if he could just convince his pretty, workaholic neighbor to let loose, too. Once Heather begins to show him her softer side, Josh is surprised when he starts falling for the sweet, vulnerable woman hiding beneath those power suits. Soon it’s Heather’s turn to convince Josh to take the biggest risk of all: love.

For Better or Worse will have readers engaged from the start, and wedded to the idea of a summer and fall season filled with Wedding Belles!

REVIEW

At first it is hard to understand why Heather is attracted to man-child Josh, but my trust in Lauren Layne's storytelling kept me engaged.  It quickly became apparent that there was more to Josh than just being an overgrown adolescent who had too much money and time on his hands and as the chemistry between the pair grew the more my love for Josh grew too.  Layne does a great job creating a story with complex characters who manage to grow realistically through the novel.  She also writes a great supporting cast of characters that makes me look forward to coming back to read more.

Book Review - Called Up by Jen Doyle

There are two things Max “Deke” Deacon can always count on:
his old high school teammates and Fitz Hawkins.

CALLED UP
A Calling It Novel
Jen Doyle
Releasing Aug 29th, 2016
Carina Press

There are two things Max “Deke” Deacon can always count on: his old high school teammates and Fitz Hawkins. But no matter how much Deke might secretly fantasize otherwise, a relationship with one of his best friends is off limits. Until one unexpectedly smoldering encounter has Deke and Fitz looking at each other in a whole new way.

Angelica “Fitz” Hawkins knows for a fact that it is not better to have loved and lost. After losing her parents, she’d rather lock up her heart and throw away the key than endure that kind of pain again. If that means giving up any hope of a lasting relationship, then so be it.

With Deke, Fitz finally feels like she's back in the land of the living. But she won’t risk another broken heart—even if it means saying good-bye to Deke for good. It’s up to Deke to convince her that the safest place she could ever be is right here with him.

REVIEW

I have a new favorite author and a new favorite series.  I fell in love with Fitz and Deke immediately. And then I fell in love with all of their friends.  Jen Doyle created a town that I would love to live in and could just as easily be my friends... if my best friends owned a bar and played professional baseball.  There is nothing new about Fitz and Deke's love story.  They've been friends forever.  All of a sudden they begin seeing each other as something more than friends.  Hijinx ensue.  Doyle does a great job of writing this with a perfect mix of humor, romance, and sexiness.  Since this is the second book in a series, I had to immediately go and read the first book, and I guarantee you will too.

A big believer in happily ever afters, Jen Doyle decided it was high time she started creating some. Jen is a member of the Romance Writers of America, as well as a member of the New England, New Jersey Romance Writers and Music City Romance Writer chapters of RWA. She is represented by Sarah E. Younger of the Nancy Yost Literary Agency. She has an M.S. in Library and Information Science and, in addition to her work as a librarian, has worked as a conference and events planner as well as a Communications and Enrollment administrator in both preschool and higher education environments (although some might say that there is very little difference between the two; Jen has no comment regarding whether she is one of the “some”).
