Book Review - Safe in His Arms by Melody Anne

ABOUT THE BOOK

Can a California transplant survive Montana’s deep snows? New York Times and USA TODAYbestselling author Melody Anne breaks the ice between a sexy fireman and a brand-new teacher in this steamy holiday tale—originally published in the sizzling anthology Baby, It’s Cold Outside—which launched her popular Unexpected Heroes series.

Natalie Duncan is thrilled to get her first teaching job, but southern California didn’t prepare her for winter in Montana—or for gorgeous fire chief Hawk Winchester. For a man dedicated to putting out fires, Hawk really knows how to add heat to Natalie’s life, especially when he’s rescuing her from compromising situations. A man this strong and capable should know exactly what to do when a lady is trapped under the mistletoe. Suddenly Natalie’s blue Christmas is glowing red-hot...

REVIEW

I have read several books by Melody Anne, and I have to say this wasn't one of my favorites.  The characters and the story just felt a little flat.  It is a sweet romance and if you are looking for a light Christmas read, this story fits the bill, but there isn't a lot of character development or plot twists.  If the story had been longer there may have been more opportunity for growth.

Book Review - Controlled Burn by Stacy Shannon

ABOUT THE BOOK

Rick Gullotti lives the good life. He fights fires, dates beautiful women—though none long enough so they cast wistful glances at jewelry stores—and has great friends. And thanks to helping out the elderly couple who own his building, his rent is low. But when concerns about their health lead him to contact their only son, his life starts getting away from him.
Jessica Broussard has no interest in leaving sunny San Diego or her cushy corner office for Boston, but her father—who happens to be her boss—dispatches her to deal with the grandparents she's never met. She's unprepared for the frigid winter, loving relatives who aren't the monsters she's been led to believe, and the hot, scruffy firefighter who lives upstairs.
At first, Jessica is determined to get back to her comfortable life as quickly as possible. All she has to do is talk her grandparents into selling their monstrosity of a house and moving to a retirement community. But she underestimates Rick's dedication—and his considerable charm. Nobody's taking advantage of his friends on his watch, even if that makes the tempting southern California girl with the long legs his adversary. Unfortunately for them both, the only thing more urgent than the matter at hand is their sizzling chemistry, and it's quickly becoming too strong to resist.

REVIEW

As you might guess, the Boston Fire series focuses on a group of men who work in a Boston firehouse.  The focus in this story is Rick, a bachelor who lives in a private apartment attached to an elderly couple's home.  When the couple's grand-daughter they didn't even know exist, he immediately feels protective of them and is suspicious that her intentions are not just to get to know her grandparents.

Jessica's entire life is focused on the business that her Father runs and since he is currently MIA recovering from the latest in a long string of divorces, she has to handle the company herself.  When a call comes in for her Father about her grandparents, she can't resist the urge to get to know the grandparents she has never met.

As soon as Rick and Jessica meet, there are sparks, but both of them are skeptical about the others intentions toward her grandparents.  As the days go on the spark increases until they can't help but give in to the passion, but the doubts still linger.

These were sweet characters that were easy to relate to and understand.  While this is not the first book in the series, it was easy to follow, but for fans of the series it was nice catching up on old characters.  I recommend this for anyone who loves a sweet romance.

Book Review - Under the Kissing Tree by Kate Perry

ABOUT THE BOOK

For the first time in ten years, wallpaper designer Eliza Westwood accepts her grandmother's invitation to go home to Paris for Christmas.

Big mistake.

It seemed ideal to Eliza: go to a city she loves, and hide from the heartbreaks of the past year. But her grandmother is determined to teach her that the holidays hold the magic they once held, and that life is about love.

Eliza knows better though, and nothing can make her believe in stardust again. Not Paris's lights, not her grandmother's fruitcake, and certainly not Xavier, the boy next door who's, now, very much a man.

REVIEW

This was a sweet Christmas romance.  It was an easy read, but Eliza was easy to get to know and fall for.  The style was a great fit for a short story and kept the story flowing at a nice pace.

Book Review - The Accidental Engagement

ABOUT THE BOOK

Oops . . .
It started as a regular night for New York City restaurant hostess Ivy Sinclair, until a rowdy customer turned out to be world famous playboy Jack Everett. Thanks to the paparazzi, now the world thinks they’re a couple—which couldn’t be farther from the truth. But when a brooding, sexy businessman offers her a simply irresistible proposition…

Uh oh . . .
Just when cutthroat venture capitalist Daniel Gladwell thought he’d never close the deal with an Italian conglomerate, a simple mistake becomes the perfect opportunity. All he has to do is convince Ivy to pretend to be Jack’s fiancée while on a business trip to Italy to offset Jack’s bad boy reputation. As long as Daniel doesn’t sabotage the plan by claiming the tempting waitress for himself . . .

Oh yes!
It was supposed to be a business only arrangement. But in the magic of the Tuscan countryside, neither Ivy nor Daniel can fight the attraction building between them. In the world’s most romantic setting, the line between business and pleasure is one that begs to be crossed . . .

REVIEW

This is the first book I've read by Maggie Dallen and will definitely not be the last.  This was a fun and light read.  Ivy, Daniel, and Jack were a lot of fun to get to know, and the story moved easily and gave a somewhat cliche plot a new life.  I am really looking forward to the next book.  I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a light hearted read with good characters.

Book Review - The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss by Max Wirestone

ABOUT THE BOOK

For anyone who has ever geeked out about something and for fans of The Guild, New Girl, Scott Pilgrim, Big Bang Theory, Veronica Mars.
Meet Dahlia Moss, the reigning queen of unfortunate decision-making in the St. Louis area. She is unemployed, broke, and on her last bowl of ramen. But that's all about to change.

Before Dahlia can make her life any messier on her own she's offered a job. A job that she's woefully under-qualified for. A job that will lead her to a murder, an MMORPG, and possibly a fella (or two?).

REVIEW

This books biggest strength is the humor and the characters.  While it is a bit weaker in actual story, I wanted to keep reading because as a nerdy girl myself, I couldn't help but laugh out loud constantly.  Wirestone does a remarkable job creating characters that are memorable and charming and succeeds in the difficult job of consistently writing humor.  This is a true romantic comedy, and if you are looking for an off-beat romantic comedy, I highly recommend this book.

Manhattan Bound Series #2
By Juliette Braddock

Synopsis

Sweeping through the glitz and glamour of New York’s high society and the drama unfolding in the dressing rooms of Broadway, Wrapped, by Juliet Braddock, continues the journey of a young theatrical publicist’s foray into submission under the tutelage of a dashingly dark star of the stage. Wrapped—the much anticipated sequel to Braddock’s critically acclaimed erotic romance Weakened—is the second book in the Manhattan Bound series.
When Drew McKenzie presents Maxine Kirk with an ultimatum, challenging her to engage in his wanton brand of desire, she readily embraces her awakening hunger for a lifestyle that defies her perceptions of romance.
Entranced by Drew’s charming appeal and by his sensual assault to her senses, Maxine clamors to discover every nuance of this new relationship, ravenous to explore verboten fantasies that seem possible to fulfill only with Drew.
Along the way, he introduces her to his glamorous world of wealth and celebrity—where lavish galas and luxurious gifts are the norm—and entices her into his realm of control with his tender mode of domination.
All the while, however, they both grapple with painful emotions brought about by the extenuating circumstances of their separate pasts.
While Drew remains both confident and conscientious in his parlay of power over Maxine, his own tragic secret lurks in every shadow upon his path in life. Behind the façade of his stage persona and the origin of old Manhattan society, he struggles to hide the unforgiving reality he faced as a child.
Just as Maxine finds the strength to conquer her own torment with Drew’s patience and guidance leading her toward closure, terrifying truths begin to chip away at the surface of his composure.
As the nightmarish details of Drew’s unimaginable life emerge, he fears that this new world he’d begun to build with Maxine will crumble around him.
As Maxine finds herself embroiled in the battle to save Drew’s tortured soul from the atrocities that continue to stalk his every move, two lost souls struggling to find comfort and completion converge.
However, as Drew opens his heart to Maxine’s unwavering support, he questions his own bravery, wondering if she’ll take a bow and make her exit…or if she’ll stick around for the encore?

Book Review - Marry Me at Christmas by Susan Mallery

ABOUT THE BOOK

Wish upon a Christmas star with New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery's sparkling Fool's Gold romance!
To bridal boutique owner Madeline Krug, organizing a Christmas wedding sounds like a joy—until she finds out she'll be working closely with the gorgeous brother of the bride, movie star Jonny Blaze. How will a small-town girl like her keep from falling for the world's sexiest guy? Especially with mistletoe lurking around every corner!
Jonny came to Fool's Gold looking for normal, not for love. Happily-ever-after only happens in the movies. Still, nothing about this quirky town is quite what he expected, and "ordinary" Madeline is the most extraordinary woman he's ever met. Refreshingly honest, disarmingly sweet. Achingly beautiful.
Planning the perfect wedding leads to candlelit dinners and strolls through snow-covered streets. And Madeline finds Jonny in real life even more captivating than her celebrity crush. But will the action star be brave enough to risk his heart and step into the role of a lifetime?

REVIEW

Christmas in Fools Gold is never boring and romance is always in the air.  Things are no different this year in Marry Me at Christmas, a Fool's Gold Christmas romance.  Jonny and Madeline are good characters who fall in love over planning somebody else's wedding.  This is a quick and easy read and a better story than some of the last few Fool's Gold books.

Book Review - A Winter Wedding by Brenda Novak

ABOUT THE BOOK

One Christmas can change your life…
Kyle Houseman believes he'll never find anyone he could love as much as Olivia Arnold, who's now married to his stepbrother. Not only did he lose her, he's been through one divorce and has no desire to go through another. He's determined to be extra careful about the next woman he gets involved with—which is why he fights his attraction to the beautiful stranger who rents his farmhouse for the Christmas holiday.
Lourdes Bennett is a country music artist. She's only planning to stay in Whiskey Creek long enough to write the songs for her next album—the album that's going to put her back on top. Her dreams don't include settling in a town even smaller than the one she escaped. But as she comes to know Kyle, she begins to wonder if she'd be making a terrible mistake to leave him behind…

REVIEW

I've read the entire Whiskey Creek series to this point, and some stories I've loved and some were just okay.  A Winter Wedding has been my favorite so far.  One thing I have really enjoyed about these books is the way Novak writes characters and stories that are not typical romance plot lines and outcomes.  There is a little bit of a soap opera going on in Whiskey Creek, and I mean this in a good way.  Sure, you know in the end everyone is going to live happily ever after (and that is why this is better than a soap opera) but you always know getting there is going to be a long and twisted journey.

This story is no different.  It seems cliche at first.  Country artist and small town boy meet and fall in love, but there is a lot more to it than that.  This series is all about the characters.  Up to this point we've seen a fair amount of Kyle.  We saw him get his heart broken, we saw him sleep with his best friend, and now we finally get to see him fall in love again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.

"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including four Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best and the National Reader's Choice Award.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.4 million. Book Review - Steal Me by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

IN HOT PURSUIT

Being a cop might be in Anthony Moretti's blood, but protecting and serving the city of New York has always been more than just the family business. If that means his love life stays locked up, well then that's just another sacrifice made in the line of duty. That is, until he sets eyes on the gorgeous new waitress at The Darby Diner and suddenly Anthony's morning coffee is leaving him a whole lot more hot and bothered than usual.

Though waitressing at The Darby isn't exactly Maggie Walker's dream job, it pays the bills and gives her time to work on her novel. Now if only she could stop fantasizing about gorgeous Anthony Moretti every time he sits down at her table, she'd really be in great shape. But when he needs her help identifying a criminal threatening The Darby-and Maggie recognizes her ex-husband-she fears her fresh start might be a pipe dream. Faster than a New York minute, Maggie and Anthony find themselves in one perilous pursuit that only gets hotter with each and every rule-breaking kiss.

REVIEW

This is a well-written story with interesting and easily relatable characters, and the Layne style of sexy witty romance is present throughout.  Maggie is a easy to relate with character.  Anthony is a sexy yet cranky cop, but is still easy to love.  The story isn't particularly complex, but the story is still interesting and not the typical 'cop meets a waitress and they fall in love' story.

Recommended for anyone who likes a light romance with smart characters.

Book Review - For Love or Magic by Lucy March

ABOUT THE BOOK

Eliot Parker's good-for-nothing deceased husband has left her a new lease on life: a house in sleepy Nodaway Falls, New York. But his offer comes with a cost: his ghost...
As if being married to him wasn't hard enough! Nodaway Falls turns out to be a town with more than a little magic in the air. Eliot swore off using her own powers sixteen years ago, thanks to one catastrophic day when she lost the only people who ever mattered to her, and ran away from her spellbinding father and his reckless enchantments. Now, when a chance encounter with quiet, handsome Desmond Lamb results in a magical explosion that rocks Eliot to the core, she can't help but wonder: Has her heart fallen under some sort of spell? Or is this what true love really feels like? The real question, of course, is whether her husband will stop haunting her...and let Desmond give her a chance at happily ever after?

REVIEW

Full Disclosure, Lucy March (aka Lani Diane Rich) is one of my all-time favorite authors.  Anytime I pick up one of her books, I instantly feel like “she gets me.”  Her characters are always multi-dimensional, funny, and quirky.  For Love or Magic, the third installment in her Nodaway Falls series, is no exception.  Remeber when I said her characters are multi-dimensional?  Desmond Lamb, the hero of this story, is a shining example of this.  It should be noted that Desmond was the villain of the previous book, so I was a little concerned when I realized he would be the love interest in this story, but due to my love for all things Lucy March, I still had high hopes.  I was not disappointed.  Somehow she managed to take a “villain” and not only make him the hero of his own story, but someone I could as a reader root for and believe deserved to be happy as well.

Eliot Parker is not your typical heroine, and that is what I love most about her.  She doesn’t take crap from anyone, but doesn’t fit into any stereotype either.  She has lived a hard life and part of the past she is trying to recover from involves magic.  Technically this story would be classified as paranormal romance, but really neither of those words really describe this story.  Sure there is magic.  Yep, there is some romance too.  But the story is so much more than both of those things.  It is about a woman who has been running from her past and is forced to face it head on.  It is about a widow trying to survive the knowledge that her dead husband was cheating on her and left her with almost nothing.  It is about a woman who has a difficult time interacting with people, trying to start over in a new town.  It is also about a man who has done so many bad things in his life, he is trying to do good where he can, believing he doesn’t deserve anything good for himself.

I recommend this book to pretty much anyone who likes a good story, any genre, male or female.  You may come for the romance or the magic, but you’ll stay because of the meaty content, story, and characters.

I’m a sucker for a man with an accent, so it was no surprise how much I loved Jacob.  Grace was also a really fun character, her sarcasm and poor attempts at British colloquialisms had me smiling throughout the book.  The story was also well written, and didn’t feel rushed like many novellas do.  This was a little less explicitly sexy than some of Proby’s other books, but if you are a fan of hers, it’s the story and characters you are there for and you wont be disappointed.

Book Review - Irresistibly Yours by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

Meet the men of Oxford magazine! In the first captivating spin-off of Lauren Layne’s Sex, Love & Stiletto series, a not-so-friendly battle of the sexes turns into a scorching office romance.

Hotshot sports editor Cole Sharpe has been freelancing for Oxford for years, so when he hears about a staff position opening up, he figures he’s got the inside track. Then his boss drops a bombshell: Cole has competition. Female competition, in the form of a fresh-faced tomboy who can hang with the dudes—and write circles around them, too. Cole usually likes his women flirty and curvy, but he takes a special interest in his skinny, sassy rival, if only to keep an eye on her. And soon, he can’t take his eyes off her.

Penelope Pope knows all too well that she comes off as just one of the guys. Since she’s learned that wanting more usually leads to disappointment, Penelope’s resigned to sitting on the sidelines when it comes to love. So why does Cole make her want to get back in the game? The man is as arrogant as he is handsome. He probably sees her as nothing more than a barrier to his dream job. But when an unexpected kiss turns into a night of irresistible passion, Penelope has to figure out whether they’re just fooling around—or starting something real

REVIEW

I absolutely loved this book.  I always love Lauren Layne's stories, but I am also a huge baseball fan.  Combining two of my favorite things resulted in an epic combination.  So often in this story I felt like I've been Penelope so many times in my life.  It's hard being a female sports fan!  Cole was easy to like as a character and his character believably transformed throughout the story.

Book Review - Sand Dollar Cove by Nancy Naigle

ABOUT THE BOOK

Growing up, Elli Eversol spent nearly every summer in Sand Dollar Cove at her grandparents’ beach house, working at their shops on the old fishing pier. After a hurricane and a Nor’easter damage the pier and the shops nearly beyond repair, Elli returns to town to help rebuild. She even launches the Buy-A-Board campaign to raise funds for the plight. Holden Moore is back in Sand Dollar Cove, too. He broke Elli’s heart years ago, but he’s pulling every Romeo trick in the book to win her back now. Yet there’s more to Holden’s agenda, and it doesn’t include saving the pier.

Brody Rankin is eager to scout the location for his company’s new mega-warehouse near a quaint North Carolina beach town. The online request for handyman assistance for the Buy-A-Board campaign in Sand Dollar Cove gives him the perfect reason to head to the east coast, check out the area, and contribute to a good cause. He’d only have to leave half of his playboy-surfer lifestyle behind for a little while—there are plenty of waves in the Atlantic. But when he meets Elli Eversol, she really gets the surf up, and he’s tempted to toss his playboy ways out with the tide.

REVIEW

This story was more than a summer romance.  Brody and Elli have a great love story that is exactly what you hope for.  While nothing worth having is easy, their relationship naturally develops through normal challenges that are easy to relate to.  Brody and Elli could easily be your best friends, which makes the comfort and emotions of this story even more realistic.

Book Review - Unsung by Shannon Richard

ABOUT THE BOOK
"Funny, sassy, and sexy. Reading Shannon Richard is pure pleasure!" --Jill Shalvis, New York Timesbestselling author

ONE NIGHT IN NASHVILLE

Harper Laurence has been jilted on her way to the altar. Desperate for some time away from her friends and family, Harper takes off for Nashville-only to meet a hot, scruffy, tattooed stranger. A man she liked a little too much, and who left her the teeniest bit . . . well, pregnant.

Liam James is an up-and-coming country musician, who just found his muse. Ever since their weekend together, Liam hasn't been able to forget the curvy, vivacious woman who left him wanting more, even as she inspired some of the greatest songs he's ever written. He's determined to convince Harper that he's the guy for her . . . and that the best love songs can never be unsung.

"Richard's page-turner marks her as a contemporary-romance author to watch." --Publisher's Weekly onUndone

REVIEW

I absolutely loved Harper and Liam!  I love the normal role reversal with these two.  Both of them come into the relationship with baggage and I was rooting for them both throughout needing them to work everything out because they made such a great couple.  I have come to expect Shannon Richard to write emotional and well written romances, and she doesn’t disappoint here.  If you are a fan of Richard, you will love this book.  If you have never ready anything by the author before, and you like a well written story with complex characters full of emotion, snark, and a little comedy, you’ll love this (and the previous books in this series).

OVERALL RATING - 5 STARS!
MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Shannon Richard grew up in the Panhandle of Florida as the baby sister of two overly protective but loving brothers. She was raised by a more than somewhat eccentric mother, a self-proclaimed vocabularist who showed her how to get lost in a book, and a father who passed on his love for coffee and really loud music. She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's in English literature and still lives in Tallahassee, where she battles everyday life with writing, reading, and a rant every once in a while. Okay, so the rants might happen on a regular basis. She's still waiting for her Southern, scruffy Mr. Darcy, and in the meantime writes love stories to indulge her overactive imagination. Oh, and she's a pretty big fan of the whimsy.

Book Review - Perfectly Equipped by Lacey Silks

ABOUT THE BOOK
I'm a widowed mother. I'm not looking for love, but I guess my best friend thinks it's time to find some man-candy.
Her words, not mine.
And she's way more adventurous than me.
So when she takes me on a vacation to a nudist resort, that's the last place I expect to find the man of my dreams. A perfectly equipped man who takes my breath away and makes me forget about my secrets.
His name is Sean and he had me the moment I saw his crotch.

REVIEW
This is a very short prequil that left me wanting to find out what happens with April and Sean.  The story is sexy and given that it is a short story, it is low on plot, but still enough to make me want to read the next book.

OVERALL RATING - 4 STARS!
MATURITY RATING - 18+ VERY steamy
