Book Review - Deceived by Desire (Gilded Book 2) By Marie Force

ABOUT THE BOOK

From New York Times bestselling author Marie Force comes a glittering tale of star-crossed romance set amid the lavish mansions and decadent lifestyles of early 20th century Newport, Rhode Island. But even in an age of great fortune, the heart has its own idea of true riches . . .

Wealthy American industrialist Aubrey Nelson has invited the Duke and Duchess of Westbrook to visit his family’s Newport seaside “cottage” for the summer. With his parents’ departure from New York delayed, Aubrey’s mother sends him ahead to oversee preparations for their guests. But when he arrives, he’s surprised to find the house and staff in disarray . . .

With much to do and little time, Aubrey comes to rely on the housekeeper, a lovely young Irish woman named Maeve Brown. And when he also finds himself confiding in Maeve about more personal matters, he tells himself it’s merely their close proximity that draws him to the compassionate, hard-working beauty. Yet when he suspects Maeve is in danger, Aubrey realizes his feelings for her have grown much deeper than they should have. For what will his mother, who dreams of a society match for her son, have to say when she arrives to discover he’s lost his heart to a girl of the working class?

Praise for Duchess by Deception

“Force has crafted a masterpiece with the perfect amount of romance.”

REVIEW

I love Marie Force and her writing however I do not like the mistaken identity trope.  Thankfully it is short lived in this story.  This is a very light regency romance that is a great summer read.  The story is well written, the characters are funny, and the plot flows easily.  If you are looking for a lot of substance and depth in your book, you may want to skip this, but if you are looking for a light regancy romance, I'd recommend this book.

Book Review - The Broken One by Ruth Cardello (Free on Kindle Unlimited)

ABOUT THE BOOK

In New York Times bestselling author Ruth Cardello’s sexy and emotional romance, a billionaire dares to invest in the riskiest proposition of his life: a second chance at love.
Single mom Heather Ellis would do anything for her adopted daughter, Ava. Even post an online reward for anyone who found the girl’s lost stuffed animal. Who’d have guessed it’d be returned by a drop-dead-sexy man with such sadness in his eyes that she had to reach out to him? To Ava, he’s a hero. To Heather, he’s a fantasy that puts at risk the happy life she’s made for herself.
It’s been five years since billionaire developer Sebastian Romano lost his wife and unborn child in a tragic accident. Now he’s all business. No room for emotion. Until he stumbles across that damn stuffed wolf and the beautiful single mother looking for it. Is he ready to give love a second chance?
But there’s more to Sebastian, his family, and his past than Heather knows. More than even Sebastian knows. Will the life they’re building together be challenged when the truth is finally revealed?

REVIEW

I've been a fan of Ruth Cardello's for years and have read and enjoyed everything she has published.  This book felt different in the best way possible from Ruth's other work.  The characters had so much demention and depth that they were easy to understand and relate to throughout the story.  They never felt like a characature or fake and it was easy to follow the character growth as the story progresses.  Sebastian and Heather are the stars of the book, but Ava and Judy are the scene stealers.  I felt as invested in Judy's story as I did the main plot and look forward to seeing how the "B Plot" progresses.

Review

I'll be honest, it took me a while after receiving this book to actually read it.  I love Penny Reid.  She is one of a handful of authors I will go back and reread her books months or years later.  But I knew this was going to be an emotional read.  I am a firm believer that a romance author has an unspoken contract with the reader that no matter what you put the characters through in the story, they will end-up together in the end.  Since this is an "origin story" and I've read the books that came after, I had a pretty good idea how this would end.  To Penny's credit, she is upfront as soon as you open the book that this story isn't going to be for everyone.  After all that premble, I have to say it the book was absolutely worth the emotional turmoil and heartbreak I went through reading it.  Knowing that the bookend of the love story between Billy and Claire will be published shortly helps, but even if that were not the case, it still would have been worth reading and I'm mad at myself for doubting Penny.  Seeing the Winston family as their younger selves and knowing the adults they would grow-up to be was not only a treat to the fan but also really well written.  The characters didn't feel like mini-adult versions of themselves, they each had a immaturity and niavity that comes with youth that Penny did a great job of capturing realistically.  And of course along with the emotional rollercoaster came a lot of humor.

Any fan of Penny's really should read this, even knowing it wont quite have the HEA you are used to.  You should trust in the greatness we have all come to expect from Penny and know that anything she writes will be worth every minute you spend reading/listening/absorbing the story.

*Scarlet* “Do you want me to leave?” Yes. That would be best, a wise voice said between my ears. So of course I inhaled deeply and said as calmly as I could manage, “I thought we were going to go get firewood.” “Okay. Good.” “But then,” I blurted, flustered and irritated with myself for not speaking wisdom, “You should go. You can’t tell me carting firewood back and forth between your house and here is how you want to spend the last of your Thanksgiving weekend.” “I didn’t say it was.” He began making his way up the incline. “But you just said—” “How about we make a deal.” Billy dropped the kindling next to my little woodpile, dusting his hands off on his pants. “I’ll cart the firewood, and you sing.” “You want me to serenade you while we carry firewood?” He smiled, slow and easy as he walked to me and reached out his hand. On autopilot, I accepted it and allowed him to help me up. As soon as I was standing, his gaze moved from my hairline down to my nose, lips, and then chin, saying quietly, “I’ll take a serenade from you anytime.” Thunk ka-thunk. That was my heart. It had been doing the thunk ka-thunk quite a lot around him. I ignored it, because what else could I do? “And you’re not carrying the wood.” He tugged on my hand, pulling me out of my daze and past my tent. “I will too carry wood.” Struggling to find my bearings, I stumbled after him. “I can carry logs just fine.” “You’ll carry a log.” Billy fit his fingers between mine, pressing our palms together and grinning at me like he was waiting for me to argue and he couldn’t wait. Snapping my mouth shut, I glared at him. “Nothing to say?” Maintaining my glare, I walked next to him. I wasn’t being led anywhere I didn’t wish to go. Not anymore. He wasn’t talking me into anything else. “That’s an awfully mean look, Scarlet.” His grin grew, his brutally attractive eyes glowing happily as he peered down at me. “Well, you deserve it. Always trying to tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m not arguing with you about this. I’m carrying as much wood as I want and you can take your stupid, chauvinistic opinions and shove them up your pretty-boy ass.” Goodness. Where had that come from? Billy’s steps faltered and his mouth fell open, his eyebrows rising high on his forehead. He stared at me, looking shocked as hell. And then in the next moment, he threw his head back and laughed. But he did not let go of me, instead bringing my knuckles to his chest as his deep, rumbly laughter filled the empty spaces between the trees, surrounding us. Crushing me. Yes. I was well and truly crushed as I could only watch Billy Winston laugh, desperately basking in the image of him so delighted and relaxed. I had the odd sense that his laughter also filled the empty spaces inside of me, the neglected, vacant rooms, and even a few places that felt brand-new, like he’d created them. All that noble honesty he carried around like a boulder abruptly lifted, revealing him. Just him. Carefree and young and happy. Someone he might’ve been if his burdens hadn’t been so heavy, his responsibilities so broad. It lasted only a minute, maybe two, maybe less, but I had the sense of being caught afterward. Billy’s laughter had receded, but he’d spun a web while I’d been staring at him, holding his hand. His grin became smaller and he bit his bottom lip, his gaze dropped to my mouth. “You think I’m pretty?” “You know you’re pretty,” I said, bizarrely out of breath, rattled, needing to anchor my focus to a tree beyond him and waging war against the heat climbing up my neck to my cheeks. Oddly, my eyes stung. I blinked. His attention was still on me. I felt it, but I didn’t dare look at him. I couldn’t handle one of Billy Winston’s intense stares right now. He’d probably use my scattered wits to his advantage, talk me into something I shouldn’t want to do, and then I’d be kicking myself later. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice deep with concern, all trace of his earlier humor gone. I huffed, trying half-heartedly to steal my hand back from him. He didn’t let it go, instead taking my tugging as a signal to step closer, filling my vision. “Scarlet—” “Are you ever going to teach me how to play the guitar?” I closed my eyes. He didn’t answer right away, and I felt him hesitate, his mind work before he muttered, “It’s only been a week.” A quality to his voice made me think he wasn’t answering the question I’d asked, but rather he was reminding himself that it had only been a week since we’d struck the deal. Was that only last week? Why does it feel like so much has changed? Then he said, “Don’t be angry.” “I’m not angry.” I was muddled, my head and heart hurt, I was incredibly confused, but I wasn’t angry. The air shifted and I felt him move closer. A second later, the fingers of his free hand were at my ear, tucking my hair behind it, his fingertips lingering at my neck, sending wave after wave of goose bumps every which way. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t swallow. I couldn’t think. Every nerve in my body strained toward him and I didn’t understand it. What is happening? “Have you ever been kissed, Scarlet?”

Book Review - Say It Again (First Wives Book 5)

ABOUT THE BOOK

In the final First Wives novel by New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee, falling in love could become the most dangerous dare of one woman’s life.
Protector-for-hire Sasha Budanov is accustomed to life as a loner. Always on the move, she’s now reached a crossroad. Looking for answers about her shadowy youth, she’s returned to the strict boarding school in Germany where she was raised. It’s also where she was trained in the stealthy, militarized art of survival. But behind its gleaming gates, Richter is a fortress of secrets, including those buried in Sasha’s mysterious past. To uncover them, she’s clinging to her first rule of defense: stay guarded.
If anyone can challenge Sasha’s rules, it’s devilishly sexy stranger AJ Hofmann. He wants answers, too. And he needs Sasha’s help. The recent deaths of several of Richter’s former students—including AJ’s own sister—have aroused his suspicions. He’s arousing something more in Sasha. Never one to surrender to her emotions, she senses something tempting in AJ. She trusts him. He’s fearless. And he kisses like a demon. Sasha’s found her match.
But treading Richter’s dark halls—and following their hearts—has its risks. As the decades-old secrets of the past are mined, Sasha and AJ are falling deeper in love…and into danger.

REVIEW

It is always bittersweet when a series ends, however in this case the sweet is so much stronger than the bitter.  Sasha has been lurking in the background through the entire series and finally getting to understand what makes her tick and how she learned her super-spy skills was more than I expected... and I expected a lot!  Bybee is never predictable, I would have absolutely expected Sasha to end-up with someone like her, a dark and mysterious spy, but I ended-up loving AJ for her.  He isn't a clean-cut rule follower by any means, but his mix of bad-boy and regular guy fit her in a way only Catherine Bybee can create.  Great book and perfect end of the series.

Release Blitz - Single Dad (Milford College #3) by Noelle Adams

Single Dad (Milford College #3) by Noelle Adams is available NOW!

Book Info:

Title: Office Mate Series: Milford College #3 Author: Noelle Adams Genre: Contemporary Romance Trope: no-strings-attached; single dad

Summary

The last thing I want is to partner on a library exhibit with Max, a hot new art professor at my college, but it's part of my job as librarian so I don't have a choice. My attraction to him is intense and immediate, but I'm taking a break from dating so I can focus on myself. I don't need a distraction like Max. He's a single father, and that's the only thing he can focus on now. He's never going to take a relationship with me seriously, no matter how much I want him to. Single Dad is the third book in the Milford College series, novellas about the faculty and staff of a small liberal arts college.   Single Dad by Noelle Adams

Review

One of the things I love most about Noelle Adams' writing is the pure honesty her stories have and convey.  Each story in the Milford College series has made me feel like I am really working on a small campus in the mid-Atlantic area.  That is what makes the simplicity of Single Dad work so well, I feel part of the story and engaged from the start and while I was usually pretty sure I knew what was going to happen, it didn't ruin the journey getting there as the story unfolded.  I recommend this to anyone who loves romances with characters that are real people and easily relatable.

Enjoy a fragment

I’m pretending to work on email but mostly giving myself a pep talk when there’s a tap on my half-open door. I turn around with a practiced smile, only to freeze when I see Max standing in my doorway, dressed in tan trousers and a black Oxford with that intimate smile on his face. It’s unseemly for a man to look that sexy. A universal injustice. “I’m three minutes early, but surely you aren’t surprised to see me,” he says. “Come on in. Of course I’m not surprised.” “Then why do you look like you’ve been socked in the gut?” “I don’t look like that.” “How do you know? You can’t see yourself.” I roll my eyes, my annoyance at this teasing overcoming the rush of attraction that had paralyzed me. I stand up. “Let me show you the books.” “Ah. I’m back to being treated with cold-as-ice professionalism.” His smile is even warmer than before, so it’s clear he isn’t remotely offended. I roll my eyes again. “I’m not treating you cold as ice.” “It feels kind of icy to me. And here I was being nice and bringing you lunch.” He raises a bag he’s been holding that I only half noticed before. “You brought me lunch?” “I brought us lunch, but if you don’t want me to eat with you, I can take mine with me.” “Why did you bring lunch?” I’m filled with another rush of pleasure. “Because I figured I was using up your lunch break, and I thought you might be hungry. I’m a nice guy that way. You just haven’t realized it yet.” “I know you’re a nice guy.” “Do you?” “Yes. I do.” I’m afraid I might be gazing at him fatuously, and he’s going to be able to see it. So I clear my throat and give myself a mental shake. “Why wouldn’t I?” “I don’t know. Like I said before, I’m still trying to figure you out. So do you want some lunch?” “What did you get?” “I didn’t know what you would want, so I got two kinds of salad, three kinds of sandwiches, and some pasta salad. I’ll eat whatever you don’t want.” I gape at him. “You’ll eat two salads and two sandwiches?” He laughs as he pulls containers and wrapped sandwiches out of the bag. “I could, but I probably won’t. You’ll have to eat half this stuff.” “I can’t eat half of all this. You do see the size of me, don’t you?” I’m checking the labels and getting excited at every one I see. They’re just half sandwiches, so I pick the chicken salad on sourdough and the small Greek salad. “Yes. I see the size of you.” My breath hitches at his shift of tone. When I lift my eyes to meet his, I’m trapped by the heat of his gaze. His eyes are running up and down me, from my loose hair to my sandals. I’m wearing a long, soft skirt today in a pretty, feminine print. It’s not a sexy outfit, but I feel that way under his possessive gaze. My whole body starts to pulse. When I realize what I’m feeling, I wrench my eyes away from his and focus down on my food again. I sit in my desk chair with an awkward flop. He appears in better condition than me, but he doesn’t say anything else as he takes the turkey club and the pasta salad. He hands me a napkin and utensils, and we begin to eat. “Thank you for this,” I say, after I’ve swallowed a bite of sandwich. It’s really good. “You’re welcome. Thanks for your help with the exhibit.” “No problem. The books are over there.” “Great. We can look at them after we eat.” His suggestion makes sense since we obviously don’t want to get food all over the books I’ve collected for him. But it extends our time together longer than I was hoping. It would be so much easier and better for my state of mind if I could get him out of here in ten minutes. No such luck.

About ABANDON:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Seaside Pictures series… It’s not every day you're slapped on stage by two different women you've been dating for the last year. I know what you're thinking. What sort of ballsy woman gets on stage and slaps a rockstar? Does nobody have self-control anymore? It may have been the talk of the Grammy's. Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that. I, Ty Cuban, was taken down by two psychotic women in front of the entire world. Lucky for us the audience thought it was part of the breakup song my band and I had just finished performing. I was thirty-three, hardly ready to settle down. Except now it's getting forced on me. Seaside, Oregon. My band mates were more than happy to settle down, dig their roots into the sand, and start popping out kids. Meanwhile I was still enjoying life. Until now. Until my forced hiatus teaching freaking guitar lessons at the local studio for the next two months. Part of my punishment, do something for the community while I think deep thoughts about all my life choices. Sixty days of hell. It doesn't help that the other volunteer is a past flame that literally looks at me as if I've sold my soul to the devil. She has the voice of an angel and looks to kill—I would know, because she looks ready to kill me every second of every day. I broke her heart when we were on tour together a decade ago. I'm ready to put the past behind us. She's ready to run me over with her car then stand on top of it and strum her guitar with glee. Sixty days. I can do anything for sixty days. Including making the sexy Von Abigail fall for me all over again. This time for good. Damn, maybe there’s something in the water. **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Excerpt:

“You ready?” I gripped my drumsticks tightly in my right hand as the screaming from the crowd pierced my ears, causing an onslaught of adrenaline to pulse beneath my skin.
Drew, one of the leading frontmen for our band, Adrenaline, rolled his eyes and shot me a middle finger. Then he straight-up tugged his leather pants down below his hips to show off his legendary V.
We get it, bro, you’ve got an eight-pack where there’s usually only six.
With a flourish, I pulled off my simple white tee and shrugged. “What? Two can play that game.”
“Seriously, guys?” Will gave me a shove. “They already gave us shit last time about you two comparing dicks. It’s the Grammys, not the Super Bowl. We have to be clothed.”
I eyed him up and down. “Question. Was it your plan to go out there looking like the dad of the group, or was it just a happy accident?” He was in skinny jeans and a simple vintage tee and wore his typical thick black glasses that somehow still got him action from his wife, actress Angelica Greene. It was confusing when Will got action and I didn’t.
Not that I wasn’t getting any.
I inwardly smirked. I was dating one of our background dancers, while at the same time hooking up with one of Zane’s—both of which were performing with us tonight. Hey, it wasn’t like I planned for them to ever meet! And before you get your panties in a twist and start calling me a whore while chanting things like “I pray your dick falls off,” let me explain.
I have a solid reason for dating both women.
You ready for it?
The truth bomb of the century?
I don’t actually have a heart. You see, a long time ago in a land where my innocence thrived—you know, before the mistakes with the drugs, alcohol, and the time I carried a live chicken on stage and kissed it—I was in love.
Real love.
Not the kind where you say it just because you want to have sex with someone so badly, you’re willing to sell your soul to the devil. Twice.
Real, honest to God love.
Her name? Abigail.
Her current status? Breaker of souls and spawn of Satan.

“Hey,” I say as I come in, dropping my keys onto my desk and turning to face him. He looks up from his computer. His expression is unsmiling but not angry. “Hi.” “I’m sorry about before. I’m not sure what got into me. I’m not usually so… irritable. I’m really sorry.” His mouth turns up just a little. His eyes soften palpably. “Evidently I’m an irritating kind of person, so that probably explains it.” “No, you’re not!” I lower my tone as I continue. “You’re really not that irritating. I should never have implied that about you. It’s just that I’m usually really good at getting to know people, and I’ve been frustrated that I can’t seem to get to know you.” He frowns. “You don’t know me?” “Of course not.” My eyes are wide in surprise. “You think I’ve gotten to know you?” “I thought we were making progress.” He seems bothered by that piece of information, and he looks down at his desk as if he’s thinking. “I’m afraid I’m never going to be the life of the party, if that’s what you’re hoping for.” “I know that. I mean, I don’t care about that. I like all kinds of people. I just feel like you’ve got so many walls up I can’t seem to get around them.” “Maybe if you wouldn’t run away every time things start to get better between us.” Shit. He has no idea. I have to run away occasionally, but it’s not because I don’t want to get to know him. It’s because I want to tear his clothes off. No way I can admit that to him. I clear my throat and think fast. “I haven’t run away that much. You just confuse me.” “What can I do to be less confusing?” Leave it to Evan to go about getting to know someone with the same sober determination he uses to tackle everything else. “I don’t know. Don’t you ever just hang out and relax?” “You want to hang out with me?” Yes. Of course I do. In particular, I want to hang out in bed with him. “I just meant to get to know each other a little more. So we can get along better and be more comfortable sharing the office.” There. That didn’t sound too bad. That didn’t give away my irrational lust for him. He nods. “I like to bike, but that’s obviously not your thing. I can go with you when you walk, if you’d like. Or…” “Or what?” “I was thinking about watching the Lord of the Rings movies since you like them so much.” My heart clenches. Ridiculously. “You were?” “Yes.” “Maybe you can watch them with me. I would enjoy that.” “You would?” “Yes. Would… would you?” “Of course I would.” His eyes never leave my face. “What if you don’t like them?” “I’m sure if you like them, then they can’t be that bad.” We smile at each other, and I let out a long breath. I still have way too many papers to grade today, but things are definitely looking up.
