Enjoy a fragment

“Hey,” I say as I come in, dropping my keys onto my desk and turning to face him. He looks up from his computer. His expression is unsmiling but not angry. “Hi.” “I’m sorry about before. I’m not sure what got into me. I’m not usually so… irritable. I’m really sorry.” His mouth turns up just a little. His eyes soften palpably. “Evidently I’m an irritating kind of person, so that probably explains it.” “No, you’re not!” I lower my tone as I continue. “You’re really not that irritating. I should never have implied that about you. It’s just that I’m usually really good at getting to know people, and I’ve been frustrated that I can’t seem to get to know you.” He frowns. “You don’t know me?” “Of course not.” My eyes are wide in surprise. “You think I’ve gotten to know you?” “I thought we were making progress.” He seems bothered by that piece of information, and he looks down at his desk as if he’s thinking. “I’m afraid I’m never going to be the life of the party, if that’s what you’re hoping for.” “I know that. I mean, I don’t care about that. I like all kinds of people. I just feel like you’ve got so many walls up I can’t seem to get around them.” “Maybe if you wouldn’t run away every time things start to get better between us.” Shit. He has no idea. I have to run away occasionally, but it’s not because I don’t want to get to know him. It’s because I want to tear his clothes off. No way I can admit that to him. I clear my throat and think fast. “I haven’t run away that much. You just confuse me.” “What can I do to be less confusing?” Leave it to Evan to go about getting to know someone with the same sober determination he uses to tackle everything else. “I don’t know. Don’t you ever just hang out and relax?” “You want to hang out with me?” Yes. Of course I do. In particular, I want to hang out in bed with him. “I just meant to get to know each other a little more. So we can get along better and be more comfortable sharing the office.” There. That didn’t sound too bad. That didn’t give away my irrational lust for him. He nods. “I like to bike, but that’s obviously not your thing. I can go with you when you walk, if you’d like. Or…” “Or what?” “I was thinking about watching the Lord of the Rings movies since you like them so much.” My heart clenches. Ridiculously. “You were?” “Yes.” “Maybe you can watch them with me. I would enjoy that.” “You would?” “Yes. Would… would you?” “Of course I would.” His eyes never leave my face. “What if you don’t like them?” “I’m sure if you like them, then they can’t be that bad.” We smile at each other, and I let out a long breath. I still have way too many papers to grade today, but things are definitely looking up.

Summer Nights Blurb:

The final installment in Marlo and Ray’s story of revenge, love, and the thin line between hate and passion.
They’ll fight until the bitter end.
After all what is love without a whole lotta hate?
Life has a way of altering a person when you’re forced to face the end of it, and now Marlo and Ray refuse to let the hate win especially since everyone is counting on them.
They’re ready for the final curtain call.
And this one, may be the most important one of their lives as tragedies turn into happily ever afters, and dark secrets are revealed.

Review:

Summer Heat is a modern-day Dirty Dancing story.  Boy and Girl meet.  The boy is from the wrong side of the tracks.  Boy and Girl are attracted to each other even though they know its a bad idea.  Tension and hijinx ensue.  Rachel Van Dyken pulls off this new adult story flawlessly, with just the right amount of angst to be appropriate for this age group, but without being frustrating to get through as a reader.  This book ends with enough of a cliffhanger you will definitely want to read the next... and then the next... and you will not be disappointed.

Book Review - One Year Home by Marie Force

ABOUT THE BOOK

He came home a hero and lost the only woman he’s ever loved...

John
I have no idea how to survive without my beloved Ava. She had no choice but to move on with her life during my six-year deployment and has now married Eric. I hate him for taking her from me. I’d prefer to wallow in my depression and heartbreak, but the whole damned world wants a piece of the SEAL Team leader who helped capture the world’s most-wanted terrorist. I need help handling the relentless requests, and when Ava sends her new sister-in-law to manage the media circus for me, I’m prepared to hate her on principle. Her brother took my Ava. What else do I need to know about her?

Julianne
It takes five seconds to realize Ava’s ex is going to be the most complicated and difficult client I’ve ever had, but the opportunity to represent the most celebrated man in the world could make my career. I’m determined to do the job, even if I dislike John from the moment I meet him. And I like everyone. So much so that my brothers worry about me being exploited by those who would take advantage of my unwavering love for others. But John… He’s in a class by himself, and his bitterness is a festering wound that I begin to wish I could somehow fix for him. The more time we spend together, the more our mutual disdain morphs into something that feels an awful lot like desire. There’s no way I can want this man, or so I tell myself, and when Eric finds out I’ve developed feelings for the man causing trouble in his new marriage, well…

That’s going to be a hot mess.

The hotly anticipated follow up to Five Years Gone is here! Praise for Five Years Gone:

"A gut-wrenching emotional roller coaster, Five Years Gone was an incredibly moving novel about the sacrifices we make for the ones we love." —4.5 star review from Harlequin Junkie

"The stars take turns telling the fast-paced story from their points of view in Force's hard-to-put-down tale." —review from Booklist

"Five Years Gone is a story of loss, love, and above all strength. I am in awe with this book and cannot get it out of my head. MUST READ FOR 2018!" —5 stars from Crystal's Book World

"Force entices with heartbreak, but inspires with tales of courageous sacrifice and hope. If truth is more powerful than fiction, Ms. Force blurs the line between the two." —5 Stars from Isha Coleman

"An incredible moving novel. This story is all about the characters, and what wonderful, developed characters they are. Story is told in multiple POV and it gives you all the feels. This is a gut-wrenching rollercoaster that leaves you feeling for the characters ...feelings of heartbreak as well happiness and hope. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel to this brilliantly told story." —5 stars from Lisa at Comfy Chair Books

REVIEW

I’ve been waiting anxiously this past year for John’s story after reading Five Years Gone and I wasn’t disappointed.  The sequel is not as emotionally charged as the first but still packs a punch and leaves the story at a satisfying conclusion.  Five Years Gone really stuck with me after I finished it and I have found myself thinking back to that book and wondering how those characters were doing.  One Year Home is so much more than just a check-in with those characters and more a continuation of the story.  This story is very motivational, providing insight into what it would be like inside the mind of a military man who had his entire life changed through his service to his country and he remains humble and understanding.  Many books would focus on the PTSD aspect or being a reluctant hero, but this story focuses on John and how he accepts the life he has and is trying to work his way forward.  This isn’t a military story or about a woman fixing a broken man, it’s just a continuation of a story about a National tragedy and how it impacted this small group of people.  Well done Marie Force.

Book Review - Hot Seal Hero by Lynn Raye Harris

ABOUT THE BOOK

She fears for her life.
He’ll risk his to protect her.
Falling in love? Not part of the plan…

Chloe Cooper is on the run from an abusive ex. Living in a new state, with a new name, she’s ready to focus on rebuilding her life. She’s got a job she loves, a new home—and a sexy Navy SEAL neighbor who makes her pulse flutter in spite of her determination not to get involved. But when a threatening message arrives, her dread about what her ex will do if he finds her forces her to make a choice.

Ryan “Dirty Harry” Callahan is protective by nature. When he meets Chloe, it’s clear she’s skittish about something. When he learns why she ran from her old life, his first objective is to keep her safe. His second is to make sure she knows she can trust him—and that she’ll have a posse of Navy SEALs at her back if she ever needs them.

When the attraction between Ryan and Chloe explodes, they’re helpless to resist its seductive heat. Everything is finally going right for Chloe—until her worst fears come true. With Chloe missing and her life on the line, Ryan will stop at nothing to get her back. Before he loses the woman he loves forever.

REVIEW

Ryan and Chloe are magic together.  There is nothing sexier than a man who wants to protect a woman instinctually.  For a lot of men, even in romance, this is usually limited to the women they love.  However, Ryan proves from the beginning that he is just a protector of what is right, even a woman he had never met before.  The chemistry and sparks grow quickly though and their passion for each other is easy to get lost in.  I recommend this for anyone who is looking for an easy and passionate romance.

Book Review - Carpool by Noelle Adams

The last thing I want is to share a forty-five minute commute with the most obnoxious (and attractive) man I know. But I can't afford a new transmission right now, so I'm stuck with Marcus for at least a month.

He promises to be good, but Marcus Greene is never good. And I'm not sure how long I can resist him.

Carpool is the first book in the Milford College series, novellas about the faculty and staff of a small liberal arts college.

Read now:

REVIEW

Noelle Adams can always be relied on to delivery a sweet easy romance, great for when you need a quick well written story with a happy ending.  Noelle has a knack for creating real characters and this is no exception.  Since this is a shorter story there is not much opportunity for character growth for Marcus and Jennifer, however it is easy to feel the two growing closer throughout the book.  I recommend this for anyone who needs a light romance pick-me-up.

She loves travel, art, history, and ice cream. After spending far too many years of her life in graduate school, she has decided to reorient her priorities and focus on writing contemporary romances.

Book Review - Till There Was You by Marie Force

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lucas Abbott and his identical twin grew up sharing everything—including a reputation for funny, idiotic behavior. But now that Lucas is ready to shed that lovable-idiot image, grow up and have a real, adult relationship, the joke’s on him. He and his twin have fallen for the same woman.

Crushed and hoping a few days on the slopes will work out his frustrations, he heads for Stowe, Vermont. All thought of fun and relaxation flies away as a car spins out in a snowstorm, and his firefighter/paramedic training kicks into high gear.

Danielle Rowson is hoping to pick up the pieces and build a new life for herself and her daughter in Vermont. Winding up in a ditch in the middle of a blizzard isn’t part of the plan—and neither is the kind, sexy rescuer whose strong hands pull them to safety.

Lucas has been a little kid, a big kid and now an adult—and he discovers that adulting has more than one advantage. Especially when it comes to sharing with Dani and Savannah the one thing that’s his and his alone: his love.

REVIEW

I don't know how Marie is able to continuously write such great characters. I am amazed at how she can write about a family with ten siblings and give each one of them (and their significant others) a unique personality. Once I started reading this story I couldn't put it down. That is normal if I'm reading a mystery or a suspenseful book, but this is just a straight up romantic story and I still couldn't get away from these great characters.

I've been in love with the Abbott's since All You Need is Love and the supporting characters have always been as much a part of the story as the main characters. This book may focus a bit more on Lucas and Dani, but I think that is a good thing since it helps give Lucas his own personality beyond being Landon's twin.

The last part of the book I really found relatable is around Lucas's "transformation" into being an adult. As a woman in her late 30's, I sometimes feel like I'm not really the adult I'm supposed to be seen as, so I get where Lucas is coming from wanting to be seen that way as well. What I've learned, and he comes to learn, is that we always were the adult underneath and people see both the responsible and fun sides, even if it doesn't feel that way. So while I said earlier that this story is a straight-up romance, it is also a journey of self-discovery for both Lucas and Dani.

Undeniable Bachelor by Ruth Cardello (Free on Kindle Unlimited)

ABOUT THE BOOK

A secret prince romance.

Savannah Barre:
I’m starting over—hitting the reset button on my life. With the small inheritance, my grandmother left me, I’m leaving Coppertop Maine behind and reinventing myself in Boston.

Don’t worry, I’m not doing it alone. I’ve secured the services of Jana Monroe, a life coach so exclusive no one will say what she actually does.

I’m reasonably certain the first step in my transformation is shedding my virginity. I’ve heard there’s nothing Jana can’t arrange.

With her help, I’m practically guaranteed an entire life makeover.

The only stipulation? I have to follow her rules. No distractions and absolute confidentiality when it comes to what she does for me.

I would be her favorite client if it weren’t for Brice Hastings. Just because we were trapped in an elevator right after I was mugged and I happened to be dressed like a homeless person, does not mean I need his help.

He’s not part of the plan.
In fact, he’s the distraction Jana says I need to cut out of my life. He’s gorgeous, arrogant, and irritatingly sure I need saving.

If I’m not careful he’ll also be the reason I fail in Boston.

Prince Bricelion Octavias Hastina of Calvadria:
I’ve come to the US to save my brother from a forced arranged marriage that my family sees as the only way to secure the financial future of my people. In Boston, I’m working on some projects that will prove to my father that we are no longer dependent on archaic alliances. For my plan to work, my identity must be concealed until the deals are made and the contracts are signed.

Everything is going as planned until I’m trapped in an elevator with a woman who has no money, no place to stay, and no idea how dangerous a city can be for a woman as innocent as she is.

I don’t want to care what happens to her—but I do.
She tells me to leave her alone—but I can’t.

I didn’t come to the US looking for a woman.
I’m not going home without her.
Stubborn as she is, she will be mine.

REVIEW

This Bachelor Tower book is a bit different than the others because A) We don't really get to see INSIDE Bachelor Towers and B) The Hero isn't a jerk to begin with.  Okay, well not all the heroes in this series have been jerks that needed to be redeemed, but the series certainly started that way.  I loved Savannah and Brice and how natural it felt for Brice to want to take care of Savannah.  While at times he did have some near stalker like tendencies his motives always felt genuine and sincere.  While we were often told that he was a player, he never felt that way at all to me.

I know many people read romance for their book boyfriends, and Brice is a great book boyfriend, but Savannah is a great book Best Friend.  She is quirky (her words) and fun.  Innocent but still has lived a hard life.  Her natural charm and ability to get everyone to like her effortlessly is something I think we all strive for which make her a true "girl next door."

Book Review - Runaway Heir by Ruth Cardello

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Boston Westerlys are reuniting for a wedding—a longtime wish for its matriarch. If only Nicolette, the youngest of the clan’s siblings, could find love. With her true parentage suddenly in question, she feels like more of an outsider than ever. It figures that the one guest of any comfort is her grandmother’s greatest enemy. Now, Nicolette’s only impulse is to run. Disappearing to a small Iowa town, she can build a future on her terms without the Westerly name or money—or the secrets that have divided the family for years.
Despite his damning history with the Westerlys, Bryant Taunton recognizes a kindred spirit in Nicolette. He is drawn to the beautiful loner. When she vanishes, he follows. But Bryant has his own secrets, and gaining Nicolette’s trust won’t be easy. It might even require the help of the family she left behind.
Now, for Nicolette and Bryant, coming to terms with the past is the only way to make both their dreams come true, and to finally find a way home.

REVIEW

Nicolette has been such a large part of the Westerly series to this point it was nice finally getting to her story. This story is obviously a romance, but Nicolette’s personal story of her struggles, her personal growth, and the growth of her relationships with her family is really the best part of the novel. Bryant is so easy to fall in love with, more so than many of the other hero’s in the Westerly series, and is really the perfect pair for Nicolette.

This whole book is really a fresh take on the family and a unique point of view we haven’t seen yet on the crazy family dynamic. Anyone who has enjoyed the series so far will love this book and it is one of my favorites of the series.

Book Review - Butterfly Ops Book 3 by Jenn Doyle

ABOUT THE BOOK

Description

REVIEW

I don't typically enjoy anything in the fantasy genre, but because I loved the author so much, I decided to give this one a try.  Not only did I enjoy this book and series, but I have been recommending it to everyone I talk to.  I just can't get these characters out of my head.  Jen Doyle writes the most amazing characters that I can't help but get wrapped up in the story, even a fantasy based story like this one.  One chapter I'll be laughing my head off and the next chapter will hit me in the feels.  Its a rollercoaster I didn't want to get off of and is definitely the most memorable and enjoyable series I've read in a very long time.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A big believer in happily ever afters, Jen Doyle decided it was high time she started creating some. CALLING IT, her four-book baseball/contemporary romance/romantic comedy series, has been winning awards since its inception, the most recent being the 2017 Best Banter Contest for Calling It and a nomination for the 2017 Harlequin Hero of the Year for Called Out. She also wrote the acclaimed HANSONS OF ST. HELENA series of novellas in the St. Helena Vineyard Kindle World. Butterfly Ops: Book One is the first installment of the BUTTERFLY OPS trilogy, an epic love story and her first in the paranormal realm.

Jen has an M.S. in Library and Information Science and, in addition to her work as a librarian, has worked as a conference and events planner as well as an administrator in both preschool and higher education environments (although some might say that there is very little difference between the two; Jen has no comment regarding whether she is one of the “some”). She is a member of the Romance Writers of America and is represented by Sarah E. Younger of the Nancy Yost Literary Agency.

Book Review - Butterfly Ops Book 2 by Jen Doyle

ABOUT THE BOOK

What's a superheroine to do when her super soldier ex turns up alive after more than fifteen years?

Lyndsey Daniels doesn't have much time to walk down memory lane before she and Ian Fox find themselves thrown together to investigate the mysterious deaths of ten young men in the Canadian wilderness. How do the hearts of such seemingly normal, healthy men just...stop?

In Book Two of the Butterfly Ops Trilogy, Lyndsey, Ian, and their respective teams fully delve into the mystery of why so many young, healthy men have died in Ontario’s Quetico Park. But for every new piece of information they reveal, the mystery only grows deeper. To complicate matters, alliances shift as new friends—or are they new enemies?—are made, and Lyndsey and Ian are forced to confront their past…and evil butterflies?

Book Two of three in an epic urban fantasy/love story

Note: this is Book Two in a serial trilogy. Book One was released in September 2018; Book Three will be released in May 2019. Book Two picks up where Book One leaves off and should be read in order. Book Two ends in a cliffhanger.

REVIEW

I had to wait a few days to even write this review because I was so emotional when I finished the novel.  What a credit to author Jen Doyle for creating characters that I connected with so easily and so fully that they had an emotional impact on me.  The story is well thought-out and flows easily.  I am eagerly awaiting book three in the trilogy and will be recommending these books to all of my friends as soon as they are all available so they will not have to be left with a cliffhanger like I was.
