Book Review - Kiss Me (Fool's Gold) by Susan Mallery

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery creates the small-town destination for romance in charming Fool's Gold, California—where a loner cowboy finds the one woman who can capture his heart

After Phoebe Kitzke's kind heart gets her suspended from her job in LA, she swears off doing favors—until her best friend begs for help on the family ranch in Fool's Gold. Unfortunately, sexy cowboy Zane Nicholson isn't exactly thrilled by the city girl's arrival.

Thanks to his brother's latest scheme, Zane has been roped into taking tourists on a cattle drive. What Phoebe knows about ranching wouldn't fill his hat, but her laughter is so captivating that even his animals fall for her. One slip of his legendary control leads to a passionate kiss that convinces him she's exactly the kind of woman a single-minded loner needs to avoid.

In his arms, Phoebe discovers she's a country girl at heart. Yet no matter how much the small town feels like home, she can't stay unless Zane loves her, too…but is this cowboy interested in forever?

I am always amazed at how Susan Mallery can come up with such different stories for each book in this series.  Everything I expect from a good Mallery book is there, fun characters, sweet and compelling story and a little humor mixed in.  The hero in this book just didn’t do it for me, which is no fault of Mallery’s.  I don’t get the “strong silent type,” or how the heroine would be attracted to someone who mostly only grunts or glares. This is really just a personal preference though, and anyone who loves the previous books in the Fools Gold series will certainly enjoy this one.

MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susan Mallery has entertained millions of readers with her witty and emotional stories about women and the relationships that define their lives. She has published more than 100 romance and women's fiction novels, beginning with two books the same month when she was just out of college. Her books have spent more than 120 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list and have reached as high as #2 on the New York Times bestsellers list, statistically tied for #1 (THREE LITTLE WORDS, a Fool's Gold romance). Known for her keen insight into human nature and her humorous take on life, Susan Mallery has been described by RT Book Reviews as "in a class by herself!" and was featured as a Red Hot Read in Cosmopolitan Magazine. In 2013 and 2014, four of her books were named each year to Amazon's "Best Book of the Month" list.

With a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Susan is one of the few writers who can understand her royalty statement. She went on to get a Masters in Writing Popular Fiction and has extensively studied story structure in screenwriting courses, though she has no plans to write for the screen. Her goal, always, is to give readers a story that will move them, populated with characters who feel like real people.

Booklist says, "Novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and Publisher's Weekly calls her prose "luscious and provocative." Susan appreciates critical praise, but she values praise from her readers even more. She credits her successful career to the loyal readers who rush out to buy each new book on the day it's released.

With the advent of ebooks, Susan's career has soared even higher, and her books make regular appearances on both print and ebook bestsellers lists. She has embraced the Digital Age with a robust website (www.susanmallery.com), an active presence on Facebook (www.facebook.com/susanmallery) and a free Susan Mallery app for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices (www.mobileroadie.com/apps/susanmallery). At www.foolsgoldca.com, she also provides bonus content such as after-the-happily-ever-after updates for the Fool's Gold romances, her most popular ongoing series.

Born and raised in California, Susan lives with her family in Seattle, where she survives the dreary days of winter with the help of a "happy lamp" and plenty of coffee.

Book Review - The Catspaw Collection (Catspaw I and Catspaw II) by Anne Stuart

A reformed cat burglar. Can he be trusted?

Self-made socialite Francesca "Ferris" Byrd is too sharp to be fooled by even the smartest--and sexiest--man, even when he's notorious ex-thief Patrick Blackheart, now one of San Francisco's most eligible bachelors. Blackheart runs a respectable security business these days, and seems like the perfect man to protect the fabulous Von Emmerling emeralds. All he has to do is make certain the jewels get back to their owner after an elite charity ball.

And all Ferris has to do is make sure he isn't tempted to keep them. The problem is, temptation is Blackheart's specialty, and from the moment they meet it's clear that he'd love to steal Ferris away from her stodgy life.

When the emeralds disappear, Blackheart is a top suspect. His reputation--and Ferris's hard-won social standing--are at stake. What's a woman to do when she's got to kick off her high heels and follow her heart?

Catspaw 2

He won her love. But is it enough to keep him out of trouble? Being engaged to sexy-hot reformed cat burglar Patrick Blackheart, now a legit security expert, is thrilling, but a challenge. Ferris Byrd has loosened up, but she's still a law-abiding socialite, and Blackheart promised to steer clear of his old habits. If he doesn't, the wedding is off.

When a string of jewel heists in Europe matches Blackheart's recent travel itinerary, Ferris fears he's succumbed to his old ways. Why was he secretive about his whereabouts? She wants to believe that someone's setting him up,

but . . .

An exhibit of Faberge eggs at the San Francisco Museum is the ultimate catnip for a jewel thief, and Ferris is in charge of them. She'll be ready and waiting to unmask this cat burglar.

She desperately hopes he's not Blackheart.

These two stories are incredibly well written.  The romance is great, but the story is what really shines here.  The story kept me engaged and made me want to continue reading without being overly suspenseful.  The characters were also well written and not just cardboard cutouts that could have been taken from any other book.  Although these books are re-releases, the stories really hold up, and in a lot of ways look better than many contemporary romances out right now.

MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

What a Girl Wants (Fillmore & Greenwich Book 1) by Kate Perry

Find your heart in San Francisco with bestselling author Kate Perry's new series, Fillmore & Greenwich…

Sebastian Tate knows two things. One: Life is short. Two: Family is all that matters.

Which is why he left his successful advertising firm in New York to take a prolonged sabbatical in London . His days of being a high-powered mogul are happily behind him.

Until a former business associate calls in a debt. Reluctantly, Sebastian returns to San Francisco to help the man's daughter build her homegrown organic skincare company into an international brand.

But Ariana Warren isn't the spoiled little rich girl Sebastian expects her to be. Independent and smart, Ariana has distinct ideas about her business and life, and they don't include Daddy's help—or Sebastian's. In fact, Ariana doesn't want him at all. Which is a problem, because she's exactly what he wants. With Ariana pushing him away, Sebastian decides to put all his advertising efforts into selling her on the fact he's what she wants, too.

Summer Welles wants the fairy tale.

The illegitimate daughter of Reginald Summerhill, the Earl of Amberlin, she listened to her mother's stories about the Summerhill girls all her life. In her mind, Summer was part of the stories too—living in the castle, wearing fancy dresses, and falling in love with Prince Charming.

Her wish came true. Mostly. She lives in the Summerhill mansion. She has stepsisters—nice ones who don't make her clean the chimney. She even has a magical wedding dress waiting for her special day. The only thing missing is the perfect man.

She knows exactly who he is, and she's going to confront him at the annual Midnight Masquerade Ball. What Summer didn't count on was mistaking a masked frog for her prince.

Once she kisses the mysterious man, he won't go away. And he's not sweet or charming or princely. He seems more interested in ravishing her rather than riding off into the sunset with her, and—worse—she's tempted to let him.
Her fairy tale at stake, Summer's faced with her own quest that neither frog nor prince can rescue her from: sacrifice her Happily Ever After, or turn her back on the one man who makes her feel alive?

What a great start to a new series by Kate Perry!  I love how each series spins off from a character in the previous series and how each take place in the same world, but the reader doesn’t need to have read the previous series in order to enjoy this one.  When we last saw our hero Sebastian, he was going back to America to help a former client.  We soon learn that the former client is the Heroine Ariana’s father, and that he is being sent to “help” her grow her business.  The story flows easily as they two become friends and it is refreshing to have a guy who isn’t an alpha male be the pursuer.

If you are looking for a light-hearted, fun, and comical summer read, this is the book for you.  And if you aren’t already familiar with Perry’s books, I highly recommend you go back and read those as well, everything she writes is worth reading.

MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

Kate has tangoed at midnight with a man in blue furry chaps, dueled with flaming swords in the desert, and strutted on bar tops across the world and back. She’s been kissed under the Eiffel Tower, had her butt pinched in Florence, and been serenaded in New Orleans. But she found Happy Ever After in San Francisco with her Magic Man.

Kate’s the bestselling author of the Laurel Heights Novels, as well as the Family and Love and Guardians of Destiny series. She’s been translated into several languages and is quite proud to say she’s big in Slovenia. All her books are about strong, independent women who just want love.

Most days, you can find Kate in her favorite café, working on her latest novel. Sometimes she’s wearing a tutu. She may or may not have a jeweled dagger strapped to her thigh...

Book Review - Zach by Sawyer Bennett

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett goes for a hat trick with the latest romance in a sexy series about cool-as-ice hockey players and the women heating up their lives.

Warning: The following contains spoilers from a cliffhanger in Garrett.

Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief that has put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury, still crippled by emotional baggage, and now a single dad, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.

Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

My heart feels like it’s going to leap out of my chest as I stand at the sink and wash the griddle

clean. It’s actually kind of a pleasure to clean up in a kitchen like this. I’ve never been in a home

this nice, and it’s hard not to stare around in wonder at all the shiny. His kitchen is übermodern,

with sleek blond-oak cabinets and stainless-steel handles. The counters are done in black

granite with flecks of gray throughout and the sink is a massive single bin made of some type of

Zack sits at the table on the opposite side of the L-shaped kitchen counter with Ben as they eat

their breakfast. His eyes remain pinned on me, a mixture of anger and confusion.

He clearly doesn’t like me and I have no clue why. I expect him at any moment to just fire me. I

can see it in his eyes…That’s what he wants.

There was a moment when Ben hurtled his little body at me that I cut a glance at Zack, and I

saw fury wash over him. It scared me so bad, I almost ran out of the house right then. But I

didn’t because I really, really, really need this job. Without it, I’m just one bus ticket away from

being forced to return home to live with Daddy in our dingy tin can of a trailer in the backwoods

of eastern North Carolina. And I promised myself when I left home five years ago, as much as I

adore my daddy, I would never let that happen.

So I pulled on all of my available confidence that I’ve built up over the years along with my sheer

will to survive and promptly ignored Zack and his dirty looks and started to clean his kitchen. He

didn’t say a word, just watched me as I worked and sometimes would make conversation with

I’m just wiping down the counters when Zack picks up the empty plates and walks over to put

them in the dishwasher. When he’s finished, he turns to Ben and says, “Why don’t you go

upstairs and play in your room a bit? I need to talk to Kate about a few things.”

“Can I watch TV?” Ben asks.

“Sure,” Zack says, and Ben jets from the table and pounds his way upstairs.

I rinse out the dishcloth in my hand, wring it, and then fold it over the faucet. Turning to Zack, I

find him leaning a hip against the counter with his arms crossed defensively over his chest. His

gaze is frosty when he says, “What exactly did Delaney tell you the job would consist of?”

Man, he intimidates the hell out of me. He towers over me, and even though he has the face of

an angel with dark brown hair and whiskey-colored eyes perfectly supported by a strong jaw, so

much animosity is radiating off him that I think he may be the devil.

I know all about Zack Grantham. That’s because I love sports. All kinds of sports, but in

particular, Cold Fury hockey. When North Carolina got its first professional ice hockey team, I

had just started sixth grade. But I remember sitting on the ratty green corduroy-covered couch in

our trailer, and Daddy and I rooting for the Cold Fury. Of course, often he’d be drunk and

passed out by the third period, but at least for two periods we’d have a good time bonding over

our mutual love of the sport.

I’ve followed the team closely ever since. Of course, I’ve never been to a live game, that being

an absolute luxury I could have never afforded, but because every game is broadcast locally, I

rarely miss one unless I’m studying for an important test or something. And because I follow the

team so well, I know exactly who Zack Grantham is.

He’s an amazing player and, truth be told, if I could afford a jersey, I’d probably get one with his

name on it. Or maybe Alex Crossman’s. Or even Garrett Samuelson’s. About four months ago,

Zack was in a terrible car accident that killed Ben’s mom, Gina, and caused him to be kept out

of the first half of the season with a fractured wrist. That has apparently healed enough that he’s

ready to return to the team, and thus the need for a nanny for Ben.

I was utterly stunned when I got a call from his sister, Delaney, for an interview. I had posted my

résumé and qualifications on a website for nanny services, knowing it would be a long shot

because most of my experience came from helping my sister, Kelly, with her three kids, and

other various babysitting jobs. But at this point, I needed work, so I was applying to every place I

could think of.

“Now you seem to have nothing to say,” Zack growls, and my body jerks over the derision in his

“Sorry,” I mutter. “Um…Delaney said you needed a live-in nanny for Ben. That the position

would be full-time until he started school in the fall, and then part-time after that. She said I’d be

responsible for his care when you weren’t here and that I’d have to do basic household chores

and stuff.”

Zack nods at me, unfurls his arms from across his chest, and rubs his chin thoughtfully.

“Delaney thinks you’re right for this job. I’m going to have to trust her on that.”

“I am,” I tell him earnestly. “I’ll take very good care of Ben.”

“You’d better,” he growls at me so menacingly, I take an involuntary step backward. “If you harm

one hair on my child’s head, I will make you regret it. Do you understand?”

The scared country girl inside me wants to curl into the fetal position and just shrink away from

the threat in his voice. But I’m not that young girl anymore. I’ve pulled myself out of crappy

circumstances and made a new life for myself. I’ve worked hard over the years to build up my

self-esteem, and I’m not about to let this man tear it down.

Squaring my shoulders at him, I give him a stern look. “I appreciate your protectiveness of Ben,

and I’d feel the same way about my own child. I can assure you, you have nothing to worry

about. But I have to insist that you treat me with some type of respect for the position I hold. At

the very least, you don’t want to teach your son it’s okay to threaten and intimidate women, do

Zack stares at me, his amber-colored eyes turning almost a dark brown. He blinks a few times

and shakes his head. “Are you always this blunt?”

“I’m always this honest,” I clarify for him.

Zach and Kate were both easily likable characters.  I loved Kate and her dorky cuteness, think Jess from The New Girl, but less annoying.  Zach is easy to feel sympathy for and while he can be frustrating and stubbern at times, was written true to character.  The story is a mix of sweet and sexy, with an emphisis on the sexy.  Like the previous books in the series, this story is not for the faint of heart or someone looking for sweet love scenes.

Book Review - Snow Falling on Bluegrass by Molly Harper

Parks & Recreation meets The Blue Collar Comedy Tour in this third ebook in Molly Harper’s Bluegrass series of contemporary romances: A love triangle of colleagues heats up the winter lodge where they get snowed in for a week.

Kentucky Tourism Commission employee and executive assistant extraordinaire Kelsey is known around the office for having everything under control. So it’s not surprising that she and her boss, Sadie, have everything planned to the second for the office winter retreat. But there are things even Kelsey can’t micromanage.

An unprecedented snowstorm smothers half of Kentucky and knocks out the power, closes the roads, and generally shuts down the state. Luckily, the lodge has working fireplaces and enough food to keep the staff from turning on each other like something out of The Shining. Kelsey wouldn’t mind being stuck inside if it wasn’t for the tension with her not-so-secret crush, Charlie, the office’s statistician. But handsome Ranger Luke, the lodge’s only employee on hand, is there to take Kelsey’s mind off her discomfort.

Even though this weekend is supposed to be a planning session for KTC, Kelsey can’t help her mind from wandering and finds herself conflicted over Luke and Charlie. Someone’s love will keep her warm, but whose will it be?

This is exactly the enjoyable and snarky read I have come to expect from Molly Harper.  Kelsey and Charlie make the perfect dorkable couple, both being quirky, cute, and funny.  Usually I roll my eyes at books that unfold over a short period of time like this, but the author does a great job of providing enough backstory to feel comfortable starting “in the middle” of the relationship.  I loved that the book took place as a team outing for the Kentucky Tourism Commission, which sounds like the most boring job in the world, and gives it a quirky twist.

This could easily be read as a standalone, as I have not read the previous books and never felt confused or lost.

MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

Molly Harper worked for six years as a reporter and humor columnist for The Paducah Sun. Her reporting duties included covering courts, school board meetings, quilt shows, and once, the arrest of a Florida man who faked his suicide by shark attack and spent the next few months tossing pies at a local pizzeria. Molly lives in western Kentucky with her family.

Book Review - Tycoon Takedown (Loan Star Burn Book 2) by Ruth Cardello

Ruth Cardello’s second steamy and sensual book in the Lone Star Burn series may leave you blushing.

Melanie Hanna has finally worked up the courage to travel to New York and tell an old flame that he’s the father of her young son. She’s done hiding and apologizing for her one impulsive night. When her best friend asks her brother to watch over Melanie, her emotional trip takes an unexpected and sizzling detour.

Charles Dery is at the top of his game, but all he can think about is bedding the woman he was asked to protect. When she’s almost killed, he takes what he’d been denying himself and discovers he’ll do anything to keep her—even break his own rules.

When it comes to love, two wrongs may just finally make a right.

One of the reasons I love Ruth Cardello’s books is because I know I can count on her to write characters with heart and a great sense of humor. She did not disappoint here. Melanie is a likable character that is easy to relate to and root for from the beginning. Charles is the wounded hero scared to be hurt again. The two know that a relationship would be disastrous for both of them, but feel drawn to each other anyway. The story flows easily and the characters are engaging.

This can also be easily read as a standalone.

MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

Ruth Cardello was born the youngest of eleven children in a small city in northern Rhode Island. She lived in Boston, Paris, Orlando, and New York before coming full circle and moving back to Rhode Island, where she lives with her husband and three children. Before turning her attention to writing, Ruth was an educator for twenty years, eleven of which she spent as a kindergarten teacher. She is the author of eight previous novels, including Bedding the Billionaire, which was a New York Times andUSA Today bestseller. Tycoon Takedown follows Taken, Not Spurred as the second book in the Lone Star Burn series.

Book Review - Life After Perfect by Nancy Naigle

Katherine Barclift had it all: the perfect job, the perfect car, and what she thought was the perfect marriage. But when her entire world collapses in one stomach-churning instant, she hits the road and keeps driving until that so-called “perfect life” is just a dot in her rearview mirror.

A chance encounter leads her to make a pit stop in Boot Creek, a drowsy little North Carolina town where she can call herself Katy, soak up the peace and quiet…and drink in the bluer-than-blue eyes of Derek Hansen, a local doctor still wrestling with his own painful past. Both Katy and Derek are wary about giving romance another shot, but they can’t deny the intense attraction between them. And if being in Boot Creek has taught them anything, it’s to take life as it comes and never pass up a chance at true love…no matter how wounded your heart may be.

This book was a very enjoyable read, until the end. The end felt very rushed and left me almost disappointed after a great book and story up until that point. Derek and Katy were great characters that were well-written, and the story moved at a great pace up until it just ended abruptly. I would still recommend this book to read, just be ready for the quick ending. I also really feel in love with Boot Creek and hope to read more books that take place there in the future.

Book Review - Teasing Trent by M. Malone

The only thing Trent's best friend has ever asked of him is to keep an eye on his twin sister while he's deployed. Keeping her company on her birthday shouldn't be too hard. He just has to remember the promise he made to himself in college to keep his hands off her.

Ever since Mara walked into her brother's dorm room freshman year and came face to face with a shirtless Trent, she's known he was The One. He’s been right there with her twin brother as her biggest supporter or shoulder to cry on, whichever she needs most.

The problem?

Trent has no idea how she feels.

Well, it's her first birthday without her twin and Trent's coming over to keep her company. It's the perfect time to tease him a little. A skimpy yoga outfit and a few glasses of wine later, she plans to finally have Trent exactly where she wants him.

In her bed, for as long as she can keep him there.

If Mara has her way, she'll get a whole lot more for her birthday than a Hallmark card.

**Novella / 11k words / 50 pages

Nice story about two friends who have been attracted to each other for years, but have stayed away from each other because her brother is his best friend.  What happens when one of them decides to do something about it explosive.  While there is a lot of sexy time in the book, Malone finds a way to make sure there is plenty of story in this short story.
