Book Review - Hot Asset by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie—a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees.

An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case—the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading—could make her career. She knows a scoundrel when she sees one. Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger.

She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now, taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure—and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed.

REVIEW

This is exactly the kind of book I've come to love and expect from Lauren Layne.  Witty and strong female lead and a sexy cocky hero.  This is a story of opposites attract.  The smolder is instant as you get to know the characters and get drawn into their individual stories the fire only gets hotter between these two.  I enjoyed every second of this read and would recommend to anyone looking to read a smart and sexy romance.

Book Review - Burning Up by Jennifer Blackwood

ABOUT THE BOOK

Unemployed schoolteacher Erin Jenkins is back in Portland, the town she hasn’t called home for more than a decade. It’s not the way she wants to spend her last days of summer: in between jobs and avoiding her mother’s snooping by escaping to the ice-cream aisle. But when the opportunity arises for her to accompany her brother’s best friend—her lifetime crush—to a wedding, summer gets a whole lot more interesting.

Firefighter and single dad Jake Bennett has built a nice, safe wall around his heart—no romance, no getting burned. That doesn’t mean he’s ruling out a fling. Considering Erin’s visit is temporary, they’re the perfect fit for a scorching no-strings one-night stand. Or two. Or five. Until the worst thing happens: Erin and Jake are feeling more. Damn that four-letter word.

Now their hearts are on the line, and when their smoldering summer comes to a close, it’s going to be harder than ever to put out the fire.

REVIEW

On the surface, the plot to Burning UP seems a little contrived, however the quality of the writing and story is evident immediately.  Jake is instantly able to love.  He's not perfect but he is doing his best as a single dad.  Erin is awkwardly trying to navigate her way through having to move back home for the summer and will be moving as soon as she finds a new teaching job in the new school year.  Jake isn't looking for anything but definitely not looking for something temporary when he has his daughter to consider.  The development of the characters through the story drew me in and I couldn't put the book down until the end.  I recommend this to anyone who loves a great romance where you are rooting for both characters throughout.

Book Review - Hot Response (Boston Fire) by Shannon Stacey

ABOUT THE BOOK

The men of Boston Fire are back and hotter than ever! Don’t miss this brand-new novel from New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey.

Gavin Boudreau lives for the job, but he also believes in “work hard, play harder.” As the youngest guy in Ladder 37, he figures he’s got plenty of time before settling down becomes a priority. Soft, pretty women who aren’t looking for promises are exactly his type, and he’s comfortable with that. Working with a gorgeous EMT isn’t going to change who he is.

The last thing Cait Tasker needs in her personal life is a firefighter whose challenges on-scene have been a thorn in her side from minute one. Her plate’s too full for a man anyway. Back in her childhood home to help her family cope with an unexpected tragedy, she’s got enough to handle without throwing a hot, testosterone-laden fireman into the mix.

As long days on the job lead to long nights together, Gavin and Cait will discover how far temptation can take them—and what happens when the one you thought was all wrong for you turns out to be the person you can’t live without.

REVIEW

I love Shannon Stacey's Chicago Fire series and was surprised how much I loved this story that is completely outside of the Kincade family.  The Boston firefighter setting that she has created makes for a great backdrop to each of these love stories in the series and for fans of the series to this point don't worry because the Kincade family is still there and the family bar is still a central part of the story.  Gavin and Cait have the feel of a normal couple that I could easily relate to.  The attraction is there from the beginning but the romance is slow and builds at the perfect pace.  Anyone who loves books with real characters and real stories will love this book.

Audio Review - Driving Whiskey Wild by Melissa Foster

https://www.audible.com/pd/Romance/Driving-Whiskey-Wild-Audiobook/B07BBSH84G/ref=a_listener__c1_1_1_t?

ABOUT THE BOOK

A captivating new sexy stand-alone romance by New York Times best-selling author Melissa Foster.
Special Forces veteran and Dark Knights Motorcycle Club member Bullet Whiskey lives to protect his family, their bar, and the residents of his small hometown. He's rough, unapologetic, and haunted by a secret, painful past. He's also a master at keeping people away, and when his sister hires gorgeous and sweet Finlay Wilson to help expand their biker bar, he knows just how to get rid of her.
After losing her boyfriend and her father, Finlay moves back to her hometown to be closer to the little family she has left. She needs her temporary job at Whiskey Bro's to get her catering business off the ground, and she's determined not to let the gruff, arrogant mountain of a man Bullet Whiskey scare her off.
Finlay is everything Bullet has never wanted. She's afraid of his dog, afraid of motorcycles, and sweet enough to give him cavities, but as she weaves her way into the hearts of everyone around him, he's powerless to resist her charms. Passion ignites, but trust doesn't come easily, and when their pasts collide, Bullet finds out the true meaning of protecting those he loves.

REVIEW - Updated with Audio Details

After reading this book I went back and listened to the audio.  It was even better in audio form and I would definely listen again.  The reader finds Bullets voice from the first chapter and easily sucks me into the world of Bullet and Finlay.

Bullet is written as so much more than just a typical alpha stereotype and turns out to be a very complex and sensitive hero. Finlay (a name I absolutely loved BTW) fits in well with the other women in Bullet's world and her interactions with them alone make me want to go back and read the previous books in the series. I really enjoyed reading how Bullet wins over Finlay and they both are able to overcome their personal obstacles to find happiness. That sounds like the plot of pretty much ever romance but I assure you that Foster really writes these characters in an interesting way that makes this stand out from the pack.

Book Review - Embracing Her Heart by Melissa Foster

Grace and Reed finally get a second chance at a first love!

EMBRACING HER HEART
The Bradens and Montgomerys
Pleasant Hill ~ Oak Falls, Book 1
Melissa Foster
Releasing April 17, 2018
World Literary Press

Leaving New York City and returning to her hometown to teach a screenplay writing class seems like just the break Grace Montgomery needs. Until her sisters wake her at four thirty in the morning to watch the hottest guys in town train wild horses and she realizes that escaping her sisters’ drama-filled lives was a lot easier from hundreds of miles away. To make matters worse, she spots the one man she never wanted to see again—ruggedly handsome Reed Cross.

Reed was one of Michigan’s leading historical preservation experts, but on the heels of catching his girlfriend in bed with his business partner, his uncle suffers a heart attack. Reed cuts all ties and returns home to Oak Falls to run his uncle’s business. A chance encounter with Grace, his first love, brings back memories he’s spent years trying to escape.

Grace is bound and determined not to fall under Reed’s spell again—and Reed wants more than another taste of the woman he’s never forgotten. When a midnight party brings them together, passion ignites and old wounds are opened. Grace sets down the ground rules for the next three weeks. No touching, no kissing, and if she has it her way, no breathing, because every breath he takes steals her ability to think. But Reed has other ideas…

Book Review

Wonderful second chance romance.  Grace and Reed had a forbidden romance as teenagers and pick-up right where they left off over ten years later.  They act like teenagers in love, but in the best way, without the angst.  They find that many of the same issues face them now that faced them as kids but I loved seeing how they handled the problems as adults, having some life experience behind them.  I recommend for anyone looking for a good heartwarming second chance romance and an easy quick read.

Book Review - Royal Heir by Ruth Cardello

ABOUT THE BOOK

Rachelle Westerly needs a break. After years of acting as the family peacekeeper, she’s finally ready to take a step back. Her movie-star brother has offered her the perfect escape. But on the very first day of her vacation, she steps onto a red carpet and straight into the arms of a real-life prince—and the promise of just the kind of flash and fortune that tore her own family apart.

As the soon-to-be leader of Vandorra, Prince Magnus de Bartelebon always gets what he wants—and the regal bad boy wants the sweet American schoolteacher. Although he should be announcing his engagement of convenience to a neighboring princess, Rachelle is the one he desires in his bed and by his side.

While the drop-dead gorgeous Magnus might be almost everything she craves, Rachelle can’t help but think that falling for him would be a royal mistake. He may be ruling a kingdom one day, but she’s in charge of her heart. And he’ll have to win it with more than a lap of luxury—as inviting as it is.

REVIEW

This is my favorite of the Westerly Billionaires books.  Often Billionaire stories can be so hard to relate to but Rachelle is one of the most relatable heroines I've read in a long time.  She has started living her life based on her role in her family and the expectations that have come from than thinking about what she really wants.  Magnus is the typical Billionaire/Prince type... except not quite.  Uncovering his layers along with Rachelle makes for a great story that moves quickly.  The character development for both of them is done extremely well.  I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good love story with characters with depth and dimension.

Book Review - Softhearted (Deep in the Heart Book 2) by Kim Law (Free on Kindle Unlimited)

ABOUT THE BOOK

Heather Lindsay loves falling in love—even though her blueprint for romance has failed her time and time (and time) again. But now that she’s signed on to design an outdoor-wedding venue for her friend’s home renovation show, Heather’s found a new focus: her career. Only it’s not long before she’s being distracted—by the hunkiest man who ever swaggered down the streets of Red Oak Falls.
The show’s new ranch manager, Waylon Peterson, a.k.a. Prince Harry in a cowboy hat, has every woman swooning. He’s also got a bad-boy rep that’s made him the hottest mess in town. In other words, he’s catnip for Heather, the Texan queen of bad choices. That’s why she’s steering clear—even with Waylon’s charm going full throttle.
Waylon is determined to trade one night stands for true love, but convincing Heather may be an impossible task. He’s ready to settle down, but can she get past her fear of settling and give love one more shot?

REVIEW

I am loving this series by Kim Law.  Heather is understandably reluctant to start something with a known bad boy Waylon isn't looking for a relationship, just not for the reason she thinks at first.  Seeing these two who have obvious chemistry work through being able to trust and find common ground makes for a very sweet and heartwarming story.  I recommend to anyone who is a fan of Kim Law's writing or is looking for a good warm hearted romance.

Book Review - Peachy Flippin' Keen by Molly Harper

ABOUT THE BOOK

A prank war erupts in Lake Sackett, Georgia and coroner Frankie McCready has to turn to the gorgeous but surly new sheriff for help in Molly Harper’s newest Southern Eclectic novella, perfect for fans of Kristan Higgins and Amy E. Reichert.

The McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop has crickets running rampant in the store and hot sauce in the Snack Shack’s ketchup bottles. But as the county coroner, Frankie has enough on her plate without worrying about the increasingly mean pranks being played at her family’s business. And the arrival of Sheriff Eric Linden, both devastatingly attractive and painfully taciturn, is enough to push her over the edge.

Linden, who didn’t seem to get the memo about men in uniform and Southern charm, is condescending and cold, revealing absolutely nothing about his past as an Atlanta police officer, while also making Frankie’s job as coroner as difficult as possible. And with the town’s Fourth of July celebration coming up, it’s essential for McCready’s to be cricket-free and in good working order. Strangling the sheriff will make her job even harder. Can Frankie hold off the threats to preserve her own sanity?

With her trademark “clever humor, snark, silliness, and endearing protagonists” (Booklist), Molly Harper invites fans to return to the family they first met in Sweet Tea and Sympathy. Y’all sit down and stay a while, won’t you?

REVIEW

This is a quick short story that begins the story of Frankie and the new sheriff Eric.  The style of this book is different than your typical romance or even romantic comedy and is honestly light on romance but heavy on the comedy.  For those complaining that the book ends abruptly, I don't believe that is the case as long as you realize there is not a resolved love story in this book and it is just setting-up the next book.  There is still a self contained story that is enjoyable and I can't wait to see what happens with Frankie and Eric.

THE CONSEQUENCE OF REJECTION by Rachel Van Dyken

TCoR-SBPRBANNER-BT

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken Publication Date: March 26th, 2018 Genre: Contemporary Romance CORejection_eBook_LowRes

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away. Why do they say it like that anyway? Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me. The day after I proposed. We were eighteen. I wanted forever. She didn't. It's been ten years. I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can't forget. So I do it. I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl's window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father. To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement. I just hope I survive the message. And then, I hope I survive her—again.

Book Review - Falling Star by Terri Osburn

ABOUT THE BOOK

Naomi Mallard is a fixer by nature. And as PR manager for Nashville’s Shooting Stars record label, she’s facing her biggest fix: redeeming country music bad boy Chance Colburn. But in Naomi’s eyes, a police record and a stint in rehab are the least of Chance’s sins. He has spent his life running from demons and making tabloid headlines that have sent his career into a tailspin. Now he’s struggling to find his muse and maintain his newfound sobriety, all while counting on the woman he once betrayed to repair his tattered reputation.

Naomi is determined to keep their relationship strictly professional, but that’s not easy when an unexpected injury forces the former couple into disturbingly close proximity. Will mending their once-broken relationship be Naomi’s best save yet? Or will Chance’s past wreck any hope for a future together?

REVIEW

The second book in the Shooting Stars series, this is a second chance romance about Chance, who is looking for his own second chance professionally and his PR handler Naomi who he cheated on early in his career.  The sparks are there immediately and Chance has his work cut out from him from the start of the book to win over both Naomi and the reader.  He quickly won me over and I enjoyed seeing him prove to Naomi how he had changed and see how genuine both of their love was for each other, even if they weren't ready to do anything about it yet.  This is a great book for anyone who loves a second chance romance or books about celebrities that doesn't focus on them actually being a celebrity.

Book Review - Bad Boys After Dark: Brett

ABOUT THE BOOK

Indulge your inner vixen with these sexy billionaires!
Meet the Bad Boys... Four fiercely loyal, sinfully sexy, uber alpha brothers, about to fall head over heels for their leading ladies.

"With her wonderful characters and resonating emotions, Melissa Foster is a must-read author!" -NYT Bestseller Julie Kenner

"Melissa Foster is synonymous with sexy, swoony, heartfelt romance!" -NYT Bestseller Lauren Blakely

Everything's naughtier after dark...
Billionaire security expert Brett Bad has had his eye on his brother’s gorgeous legal assistant, Sophie Roberts, for years. He wants nothing more from her than a single night between the sheets to satisfy his desires. But Sophie is a white-picket-fence girl, and she’s turned him down more times than he cares to count.

Sophie is all about forever kisses and happily ever afters. But she can’t deny her attraction to Brett, as enticed by his bad-boy behavior as she is by his devastating looks and his painful past, which she’d like to help heal.

When Sophie’s friend urges her to throw caution to the wind, Sophie leaves the door to her heart ajar—and Brett charges in. But this Bad boy doesn’t know a thing about romance and has no interest in forever, forcing Sophie to make her toughest decision yet—follow her heart or protect it?

REVIEW

This is the first book in this series I've read and while it was obvious it was part of a series, I didn't feel like I was missing anything by jumping in on the last one.  Brett's demons keep him from wanting to commit and while Sophie didn't know about the demons she certainly knew about his not wanting to commit.  After circling each other for years they finally give in to one night and as expected one night isn't enough.  Foster does a great job of developing Brett's character and writing Sophie as just understanding enough without being a pushover.  This is a great story of love conquering all and a quick heartwarming romance.

Book Review - Hot Angel by Lynn Raye Harris

ABOUT THE BOOK

A new standalone romance from New York Times Bestselling Author Lynn Raye Harris. Sexy, action-packed, and thrilling!

She's damaged...

Brooke Sullivan's carefully ordered existence is spiraling out of control. Two years ago, she was violently abducted by a terrorist group and nearly killed. She's worked hard to get her life back on track--moving to a new house, changing careers, going on a couple of dates. When she witnesses a murder, she's plunged into a new nightmare. And as the past threatens to repeat itself, she's not sure she'll survive this time.

He's ruthless...

Cade "Saint" Rodgers never forgot the beautiful girl he talked to at the wedding of his commanding officer. Now she's in trouble, and he's the one tasked with protecting her. Brooke is terrified of men like him--a Black Ops soldier for whom violence is a way of life--which makes falling for her a terrible idea. But that won't stop Cade from using every sensual trick he's got to make her believe anything is possible if only she wants it badly enough.

Together, they're combustible...

As danger draws closer, it'll take all of Cade's strength--and all of Brooke's determination--to learn how to let go of the past and trust each other. But it might not be enough. To keep her safe, he may have to let her go forever...

The Hostile Operations Team is a covert military Black Ops unit. Their motto is Where None Dare. H.O.T. operators come from all branches of the military. The only criteria for membership: they must be the best of the best!

REVIEW

Lynn Raye Harris is amazing at writing HOT action packed romances and HOT Angel is no exception.  Brooke is a character we met in a previous book, but this could easily be read as a stand alone novel.  What makes the romance between Brooke and Cade special is that even if it starts with some smoldering looks it really gets going through text messages but not at all in a cheesy kind of way. By the time they get together in person they are in a full relationship and don't really even realize it which makes everything that went forward from there feel very realistic.  For fans of the entire HOT series, we get to see a lot of Grace and Garrett in this book as well as glimpses of other members of the teams.  I recommend to fans of Harris's books and anyone who loves steamy action packed romance.

Book Review - Undone by You by Kate Meader

ABOUT THE BOOK

USA TODAY bestselling author Kate Meader brings her signature “steamy sex scenes, colorful characters, and riveting dialogue” (RT Book Reviews) to this novella in the Chicago Rebels series, following the general manager of the Rebels as he scores with one of his players off the ice.

Dante Moretti has just landed his dream job: GM of the Chicago Rebels. And screw the haters who think there should be an asterisk next to his name because he’s the first out managing executive in pro hockey. He’s earned the right to be here and nothing will topple him off that perch—especially not an incredibly inconvenient attraction to his star defenseman, Cade “Alamo” Burnett. Cade has always been careful to keep his own desires on the down low, but his hot Italian boss proves to be a temptation he can’t resist. Sure, they both have so much to lose, but no one will ever know...

As Dante and Cade’s taboo affair heats up off the ice and their relationship gets more and more intense, they’ll have to decide: is love worth risking their careers? Or is this romance destined to be forever benched?

This was such a passionate and emotional love story.  I've been really enjoying this series and Meader has created a great set of characters in the Chicago Rebels world.  Dante and Cade are no different.  Both of these men would have made great sexy traditional heros but I love how Meader saw that they were meant for each other rather than one of the sisters or a female character.  I don't generally read M/M romances but this had me sucked in from the first page.  This could easily be read as a stand alone but I strongly recommend for anyone who loves Kate Meader, even if it is a different type of book than you would usually read.

Book Review - Not Quite Crazy by Catherine Bybee

ABOUT THE BOOK

From New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes the sixth novel in the warm and witty Not Quite series.
No one drives in New York City. Everyone knows that, including California transplant Rachel Price. But that doesn’t stop her from driving into the city. From Connecticut. Every single morning. Rain or shine…or snow.
When she runs the charismatic and good-looking Jason Fairchild off the road, their immediate spark is met with bad timing. There is also one tiny little detail: Jason is her boss. And a woman as intelligent and dedicated to her career as Rachel knows not to date her boss.
As CEO of a private jet company, Jason Fairchild is more used to flying than driving. But if he hadn’t chosen to drive home one night, he wouldn’t have met the slowest—and most irresistible—driver in the entire metro area. Jason has never had time for love. Or dating. Or really anything that doesn’t involve work. But when he finds out that Rachel is the newest superstar in his marketing department, he can’t help wondering if fate has other plans…

REVIEW

The last book in the Not Quite series, Rachel and Jason's story takes on a slightly different tone from her previous books.  As always, Bybee brings the comedy and she is able to write humor into her stories seamlessly.  The chemistry between the couple is instantly obvious and never forced.  What I really liked about this story is that the obstacles that the couple faces are not large disasters or secrets they are trying to keep, they are just their lives getting in the way of something they both want.  The story feels real and remains engaging throughout.  This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a great story full of emotion and humor and of course love.
