Book Review - Hard Sell by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

Twenty-eight and filthy rich, Matt Cannon is the youngest broker on Wall Street. He may be a “boy wonder,” but he’s every inch a man. Ask any woman—any night. But when Matt’s latest fling makes scandalous headlines, his clients get anxious, and his bosses at Wolfe Investments level an ultimatum: keep his assets zipped, get a “real” girlfriend, and clean up his act. Only one woman can help Matt with something this hard.

For PR genius Sabrina Cross, the best fixer in Manhattan, playing Matt’s steady is going to be a challenge, even if it’s just for show. They already have an explosive history, she can’t stand the cocky party boy, and worse—she can’t stop thinking about him. So who’ll dare to break her “no touching” rule first? Because when that happens, Matt and Sabrina’s game of let’s pretend will get so hot it could set both their reputations on fire.

REVIEW

Just when I think I can't love Lauren Layne's writing more, Matt and Sabrina come into my life.  This is so much more than an enemies to lovers tale.  Their obvious respect and care they have for each other is immediately obvious, as well as their chemistry.  Their sharp banter make them so much fun to read about and the story flow quickly and easily.  This is a rom-com at its finest and a must read for any romance lover.

Book Review - Under Control (Boston Fire) by Shannon Stacey

ABOUT THE BOOK

“Stacey’s gift for writing easily relatable characters will hook readers and leave them eagerly waiting for the next installment.” —Publishers Weekly

From New York Times bestselling author SHANNON STACEY

Meet the tough, dedicated men of BOSTON FIRE—and the women who turn their lives upside down

When faced with the opportunity to change shifts while staying in the same house, veteran firefighter Derek Gilman jumps at the chance. His new schedule means not working Saturdays, which means more time to spend with his two kids. His divorce may have been amicable, but being a firefighter and a single dad is a lot to juggle. And when fate brings a gorgeous, wealthy woman into his life, he’s pretty sure he can’t handle more than he already is.

Olivia McGovern loves plans. She planned to start her own business and planned its growth. It’s earning her seven figures now, but her personal life simply doesn’t exist. Getting trapped in a broken elevator figures in exactly nowhere, and freaking out in front of a sexy firefighter definitely isn’t on the agenda. Especially not one with two kids and an ex.

What would have been a random incident with an attractive stranger becomes something more when a charity event brings them back together. They’re from different sides of the tracks, literally—with friends, family and careers to consider. But as Derek and Olivia are discovering, chemistry doesn’t allow for plans, and love doesn’t bother with logistics.

Don’t miss the entire Boston Fire series by Shannon Stacey! Heat Exchange, Controlled Burn, Fully Ignited and Hot Response are available now!

REVIEW

I adore Shannon Stacey and have been a fan of all her series to date.  The Boston Fire series is definitely one of my favorites as she has been able to create this world of family and friendship that intermingles and feels genuine rather than manufactured.  In Under Control she introduces a new character, Olivia, to the series who is the opposite of the men in these books due to her need for structure and control when their lives, and Derek's in particular, are more chaos than structure.  I enjoyed watching them fall in love but I loved seeing how they combined their lives together with the challenges their personalities and personal lives presented.  This was an easy read but still had great character and plot development and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys romance.

Book Review - Down with Love by Kate Meader

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sparks fly when the hot-shot divorce lawyer meets the high-powered wedding planner. The only question is, what kind?

If you ever get married, remember my name: Max Henderson. In my line of work, you acquire a certain perspective on supposedly everlasting unions. . . .

1. Pre-nups are your friend.
2. The person you married is not the person you’re divorcing.
3. And I hope you didn’t spend much on the wedding because that was one helluva waste of hard-earned cash, wasn’t it?

But some guys are willing to take a chance. Like my brother, who thinks he’s going to ride off into the sunset with the woman of his dreams in a haze of glitter on unicorns. And the wedding planner—the green-eyed beauty who makes a living convincing suckers to shell out thousands of dollars on centerpieces—is raking it in on this matrimonial monstrosity.

The thing is, Charlie Love is not unlike me. We’re both cogs in the wedding-industrial complex. As the best man, I know her game—and I can play it better than her. But after one scorching, unexpected kiss, I’m thinking I might just want to get played.

REVIEW

This is definitely a romantic comedy.  The banter between the characters makes the story flow easily and Charlie and Max have more than just sexual chemistry that drive their attraction and the story.  Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of heat, but there is so much more to this story beyond that.  I recommend this for anyone looking for a fun weekend read.

Book Review - Hollywood Heir by Ruth Cardello

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sage Revere follows her instincts, which have led to an oddball career as a plant psychologist. As a side project, she also helps strangers find happiness. Sage has a gift for knowing who needs her help, and the brooding hunk of a loner she meets in a coffee shop certainly fits the bill. She can feel it.

On-screen, Eric Westerly is the hottest superhero there is. Offscreen, he’s out of rehab; incognito in London; and reevaluating his life, his career, and his broken family ties. All he wants is to be alone. Then along comes some daft plant whisperer who gets under his skin. She’s also sweet, sexy, and irresistible. But what’ll happen when she finds out who he is—that underneath the gray spandex, he’s just a regular guy with a Batcave?

But Eric isn’t the only one with a few secrets. And when the masks come off, Sage and Eric are going to have to trust each other if they want a Hollywood happy ending.

REVIEW

I have been waiting for this book since finishing the previous one wanting to hear Eric's story.  As soon as I met Sage, I laughed out loud at who was going to be paired with broody and flawed Eric.   The pair are initially drawn together with chemistry but also due to the fact they both came from broken families and are able to heal together as well.  I am really loving this series and am anxiously awaiting the next story about the crazy Westerly family.

Book Review - Half Empty by Catherine Bybee

ABOUT THE BOOK

Trina Petrov’s marriage-by-contract was only meant to be temporary. But when tragedy strikes, Trina is left one of the wealthiest women in the world. To recover from the shock, she takes some time off in Italy, swearing not to fall for any men while there. But that doesn’t mean she can’t fall for anyone on the trip home…

Country-music superstar Wade Thomas is lying low in a hotel bar when he gets the cold shoulder from the woman next to him. He’s used to fans fawning at his boots, and Trina is a refreshing change—so is the fact that she has no idea who he is.

As things begin to heat up, Trina discovers that the circumstances of her late husband’s death are not what they seemed. Now she’s in trouble, and Wade isn’t about to let her out of his sight. Getting close to love and danger could get them killed…or it could sweep them both off their feet.

REVIEW

Not your ordinary romance, Catherine Bybee throws in a murder mystery and laugh out loud romantic comedy. Oh, and Trina and Wade are hot, hot, hot! This is the second book in the First Wives series, and could easily be read as a stand-alone, but as a reader who had already read the first book I was happy to see the characters from the previous book in more than just a cameo appearance. Since Trina had been one of the primary characters of the previous book, I was already smitten with her and enjoyed discovering more of her story. I’m hesitant to call Wade a hot rocker (but he is!) because he is also so much more than that. We only see a small bit of his fame and mostly we just see a man who is just as protective of his girl as his Mom is of him and didn’t feel he had to dominate her time when her life went to chaos. As always, Bybee has crafted an exceptional story that I would recommend to any reader.

Book Review - Almost a Wedding by Ruth Cardello

ABOUT THE BOOK

A brand new, standalone spin-off from THE BACHELOR TOWER series, and the second NOVELLA in the Left At The Altar series!!!

Barrett

When Paul asked me to be his best man, I didn’t think we’d make it this far. He’s 0 for 3 on engagements, but he says he’s serious this time.

The moment I meet Audrey, the maid of honor, I’m conflicted. She’s recovering from an injury. She needs my help, but all I want is to help her into my bed. What we have is wild and hot as hell—but that doesn’t mean I’m looking for it to continue past this trip. I’ve worked too hard to get to where I am to let anyone drag me down—but before I know it she’s got me turned around, and chasing after what I swore I’d never want—a chance at forever.

Audrey

I’m still recovering from ankle surgery after a severe break, but I’m the maid of honor and I refuse to let pain stop me from being part my best friend’s wedding. When I overdo it, I retreat to recover and regroup.

That’s how I meet Barrett. He’s brooding and blunt, but when he picks me up and carries me as if I’m nothing then brings me ice and takes care of me—I’m ready for my first wedding hookup. He is exactly what I need to get my mojo back.

Being bad never felt this good.

When he tells me he's not ready for a relationship I believe him—after all, his best friend just left mine at the altar. Where do we go from there?

Is it wrong to hope for make up sex considering we weren't the ones who broke up?

[title] is the [number] book in the LEFT AT THE ALTAR series in a collaboration of six New York TimesBestselling Authors: J. S. Scott, Ruth Cardello, Raine Miller, Sawyer Bennett, Minx Malone, and Melody Anne.

REVIEW

This novella has a very well-developed story. Ruth Cardello manages to pack an interesting full plot along with complicated characters into a small package. Barrett is a reluctant and cynical hero and Audrey is his opposite with her positivity, but both are very loyal to their respective friends which is what ultimately brings them together. Fans of Cardello’s other works will instantly recognize the humor and charm she brings to all of her books and those new to her writing will certainly start reading her backlog.

Excerpt

I tasted his fear.
It mingled with his lust.
His desire.
I wanted him.
So I took him.
Because waiting for him to snap was like watching someone slowly burn from within until they lash out at everything around them. He felt the attraction. We were heat, we were untamed, we were greedy.
He reached for the front of my shirt and ripped it with his right hand. I gasped as he exposed my bra and then ripped that too, like I could go out and find another one just like it.
It would be easier if he was clumsy…
If he didn’t know exactly what he was doing when his tongue slid past my lips and teased every inch of my mouth.
He knew.
He knew my body better than I did.
I arched into him wantonly.
He responded by lifting me with one arm and bracing me against the tree, running his wicked mouth down my neck and licking one nipple, only to go to the other like he’d been waiting to do it all day.
Each moan was swallowed by more deep kissing.
“You’re bad for me,” he whispered against my neck. “I want you anyways.”
“You’re bad for me,” I admitted. “I’ll take you any way I can get.”
He growled against my mouth, and the vibration of it sent shivers down my spine. Abruptly he pulled away.
I wanted to protest, to tell him not to run.
I didn’t have to.
He threw me over his shoulder like I weighed nothing and carried me into the house, slamming the door behind him, locking it to keep bad guys out—or maybe to keep the baddest of them all…
In.
He tossed me onto the nearest couch and attacked. His mouth came down hard, next his body, until all I knew was him.
Vic’s scent.
His taste.
The weight of him pressed against me.
I opened my mouth to him as he deepened the kiss. His rough hands cupped my breasts, weighing them, squeezing, as he sucked my tongue with his lips, bit down with his teeth.
Heart racing, I couldn’t even form a logical thought beyond how good he tasted and how hot his skin was.
“This happens once.” He pulled away abruptly. “Promise me.”
I gulped.
“Renee.” It was his tone, the sound of my name falling from his lips like he was tortured by my name—by me. I knew that kind of torture, I knew what it was like to kiss my enemy and want him in my bed.
To hate myself for wanting the murderer.

Review

This is the first of the Eagle Elite books I have read and my first impression is, Wow!  Renee and Vic were hot but this novella was so much more than that.  There relationship is intense and the story fast paced but still extremely well developed.  It's forbidden love.  New Adult.  Soulmates.  Tragedy.  Emotional.  It's everything.  I'm so glad to have this introduction to this world and will be going back and reading the previous books in this series.

Book Review - Bluestone & Vine by Donna Kauffman

ABOUT THE BOOK

Pippa MacMillan is a legend on the Irish folk music scene. But when her voice requires a time-out, she’s left wondering how—and where—to find happiness in the silence . . .

Seeking answers, Pippa leaves Ireland in favor of a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Turns out lovely Blue Hollow Falls is the perfect place to heal—and solitary Seth Brogan is the surprisingly perfect host. After all, Seth is beginning again too: turning his renovated stone barn and beautiful hillside into a vineyard is the start of a whole new life for the former Special Forces soldier. Only Mother Nature keeps thwarting both their plans, leaving Pippa snowbound with unsettling thoughts about how life can take unexpected turns . . .

To Pippa’s surprise, she might actually fall for small-town living. She might even fall for Seth, whose quiet strength is a balm for her world-weary soul. But when the music starts once more, will she follow her fortune back to Ireland, or surrender to the call of her heart?

Praise for Donna Kauffman

REVIEW

I have been waiting almost a year for this book after reading the first chapter at the end of the first  Blue Hallow falls book and had already fallen in love with Seth.  Because I went into this book completely infatuated with him I was worried about who he would be paired with.  Fortunately, I quickly fell in love with Pippa as well and found the pair perfectly suited.  This is a mix of slow burn and hot and was a wonderful read that I didn't want to put down and left me wanting more stories about the residents of Blue Falls.  I recommend this book for anyone looking for a great story with amazing characters, not just romance readers.

Book Review - Knocked Up by Stacey Lynn

ABOUT THE BOOK

First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes baby in a baby carriage. Just not necessarily in that order. . . .

Braxton: I should probably be dead or in jail right now. Instead, thanks to some tough love, I worked my ass off and now I own a string of tattoo parlors throughout the Pacific Northwest. And yet the one thing I’ve always wanted—a family—still seems out of reach. When my best friend gets married, I’m just hoping to blow off some steam with the super-hot maid of honor. But after Cara Thompson tracks me down to tell me she’s pregnant, she’s more surprised than I am when I tell her I’m all in.

Cara: For the first time in my life, I’m living for myself—not for my parents and their ridiculous expectations. I gave up on my MBA, dropped out of the Ivy League, and moved to Portland to pursue my dream of becoming an artist. And what’s the first thing I do? Get knocked up. For a tatted-up sex god, Braxton Henley seems way too eager to “be there for me.” Is this guy serious? Maybe. He sure is patient. Because he won’t back down until I admit what I know in my heart: that our one night stand might’ve led me to the one.

Praise for Knocked Up

“Stacey Lynn always knows how to perfectly balance sexy and sweet, and has a modern writing style that makes all of her stories feel fresh and fun.”New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne

REVIEW

Knocked Up was a surprisingly nice summer read.  The characters were quirky and not only well developed but also had fun personalities.  Braxton is a great mix of soft Alpha that any woman would easily fall for and Cara is easy to respect and root for.  Anyone who loves a surprise pregnancy trope will love this book but if you enjoy a nice sweet love story you'll enjoy this as well.

Book Review - Tempted by her Island Millonaire by Nina Singh

ABOUT THE BOOK

A vacation with the millionaire…!

A tropical temptation!

After escaping her stifling marriage, Rita Paul is on beautiful Maui for her best friend’s wedding and her first adventure as a single woman! Rita isn’t looking to settle down again, but she’s still intrigued by the bride’s brother, eternal bachelor Clint Fallon. A week on the exotic island tempts Rita and Clint closer together. But back in the real world, will they break their no-commitment rules?

REVIEW

This is a sweet story if not a little predictable.  Both characters gradually grew throughout the story which made it more interesting and stand out from other similar plots.  This is the first book by Nina Singh I've read but would be interested in reading more by her in the future.

Book Review - The Real Deal by Lauren Blakely

ABOUT THE BOOK

Get ready for your next favorite romantic comedy, THE REAL DEAL, from
#1 New York Times bestselling author Lauren Blakely!

April Hamilton wants you to know she hasn’t been on GigsForHire since that time she sold her futon after college. She doesn’t even spend that much time online. And even if she did, she would not be looking up personal ads. But going home alone for her family's summer reunion is an invitation for every single relative to butt into her personal life. She simply can’t handle another blind date with the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker from her hometown. So when she finds the GigsforHire ad for a boyfriend-for-hire, she’s ready to pay to play.
Heading Home and Need a Buffer? I’m the REAL DEAL.

Theo Banks has been running from the past for years. He’s this close to finally settling all his debts, and one more job as a boyfriend-for-hire will do the trick. He’s no gigolo. Please. He’s something of an actor, and he knows how to slip into any role, including pretending to be April’s new beau -- the bad boy with the heart of gold.
Even if it means sleeping in close quarters in that tiny little bed in her parents’ inn. Even if it means spinning tales of a romance that starts to feel all too true. What neither one of them counts on is that amid the egg toss, the arm wrestling, and a fierce game of Lawn Twister that has them tangled up together, they might be feeling the real deal.
She only wanted to show her family once and for all that she had no need to settle down.
He didn’t expect to have the time of his life at her parent’s home.
They didn’t plan on loving every single second of the game.
But can a masterful game of pretend result in true love?

REVIEW

Funny, sexy, well written, great characters... there is so much to love about this story.  First the whole concept of one-off acting jobs through craig's list as a date is such a modern idea and crazy yet entirely plausible.  Theo is a very interesting character and I really enjoyed getting to know him and his family and their backstory.  April's family on the other hand steals the show in the book.  Again, her family is so over the top, yet could totally happen in real life.  Between the antics and the chemistry this story is a really fun read and I recommend for anyone looking for a good summer romcom.

A game of seduction between two best friends goes deliciously wrong in an irresistible Oxford Novel that brims with wit and sexual tension. Library Journal hails Layne’s work as “exemplary contemporary romance.”

And who better to coach Brit through the art of seduction than the guy who first gave her the “let’s be friends” card?

Hunter Cross has always figured there’s nothing his best friend Brit can do to surprise him. But Brit’s request is a surprise he doesn’t see coming—and one he’s definitely not prepared for. Hunter and Brit have always been careful to keep things perfectly platonic, but the fake dates and faux flirting are starting to feel like the real deal. And soon Hunter realizes he has taught Brit too well. Not only has she become an expert at seduction, the man becoming thoroughly seduced is him.

I can't even tell you how excited I was to see this Oxford book released.  I had thought the series was over and have grown to love these guys.  I love friends-to-lovers stories and Brit and Hunter were so much fun to read about.  I particularly like the fact that neither of them were attracted to each other previously and that this was an organic progression.  As always, Layne brings the funny and the sexy, and I recommend this for anyone who loves a romantic comedy.
