Book Review - Secretly Hers by Jamie Beck

ABOUT THE BOOK

On her thirty-first birthday, hopeless romantic Kelsey Callihan has all but given up on happily ever afters, which is why she agrees to a risqué proposition from Sterling Canyon’s notorious playboy, backcountry skier Trip Lexington. After all, every girl needs a little fun, and with Trip, there are no mixed signals or risks of a broken heart. And if his tips can help her land a husband in the process, all the better.
Trip couldn’t be happier with his secret, no-strings fling with sweet and sexy Kelsey until she calls it quits after meeting a man she believes could share her dream of marriage and family. His jealousy turns to outrage when he discovers that the man is his estranged half brother and lifelong rival.
Now Trip must decide whether the fire in his gut is due to sibling rivalry or something much more dangerous…like love.

REVIEW

This is the second book in the Sterling Canyon series and I am officially hooked.  Trip and Kelsey were quirky secondary characters in the first book.  Kelsey is set-up to be a slightly annoying woman desperate to get married.  Trip is a mysterious playboy who runs at the first mention of commitment.  Early on in Secretly Hers, it becomes clear there is more to each of these characters than these generalities.  While predictable (at times absurdly so), the story was still cute and the characters were charismatic.  Sterling Canyon is a great town and this story is a good beach read for your summer vacation.

Book review - Fighting Chance by Shannon Stacey

ABOUT THE BOOK

All work and no play makes Adeline Kendrick a dull girl, so when she heads to a casino resort for a friend's bachelorette weekend, she's ready to have a good time. Until she runs into Brendan Quinn, professional fighter and the one who got away—the one her family drove away—and things take a turn for the interesting.

Running into his ex won't shake Brendan. Even if it brings up the old pain of loving her when she was only slumming. Even if she looks really good. In fact, what better way to get over the past than to take advantage of the still-sizzling chemistry running hot between them? He's there to win an MMA fight, but he won't say no to a little physical relief of a different kind.

But when the weekend is over, Adeline isn't ready to give up her second chance that easily. Brendan is still the one for her, no matter what her family thinks. Now, if only she can convince him of that…

REVIEW

I am a huge fan of Shannon Stacey, but I really had a hard time connecting with these characters.  They were both nice enough, but hard to feel invested in.  I realize in romance the reader often has to suspend disbelief, but I struggled from the very beginning to understand why Del would just let the past go so easily to be with Brenden   And how would she not have known he was an MMA fighter?  I was never able to recover from those early questions that pulled me out of the story to fully enjoy it.  The story is a very quick read if you are looking for something to read on the beach or the plane, but you may want to borrow it from a friend or get it from the library rather than pay full price for a Novella.

Book Review - Hot Seal Lover by Lynn Raye Harris

ABOUT THE BOOK

One night in the sheets is all she wants…

Christina Girard is a lady. But she’s a lady whose world is about to implode. She’s done everything right, but she can’t escape the taint of scandal when her husband cheats on her with another man. She’s broken, her spirit battered, her confidence at an all-time low.

Then she meets Navy SEAL Remy Marchand, and parts of her she’d thought dead flare to life. Except Remy is part of the Hostile Operations Team, the Black Ops group her brother works for, and that means NO in flashing neon letters. Yet Christina’s tired of always doing what’s expected. Just once, she wants to saddle up and ride a tattooed, dirty-mouthed bad boy before she kicks him to the curb and goes on with her life.

One night is not enough to put out the fire…

Remy Marchand burns with guilt and regret that he couldn’t save his twin sister from her abuser. He lives his life slaying dragons for the innocent and vulnerable. He thought Christina needed his strength and protection too, but he was wrong. After a single night of pleasure, she disappears from his life.

But then his SEALs get tasked with a mission: infiltrate war-torn Qu’rim and get Christina out before the enemy finds her. With bombs exploding, blood spilling, and survival not certain, Remy protects Christina from harm while vowing not to succumb again to her sweet temptation.

One night is only the beginning…

But life in a war zone is intense, and vows mean nothing in the face of danger. Giving in is inevitable. Staying alive is not—especially when the greatest menace still waits for the perfect moment to strike…

REVIEW

I am so glad that Matt's sister Christina finally got her own story.  The sparks between Christina and Remy are hot and the backstory with Christina and her ex-husband is well done.  This story had the perfect mix of action, romance, and danger and is another winner by Harris.

Book Review - Good Girl by Lauren Layne

ABOUT THE BOOK

Jenny Dawson moved to Nashville to write music, not get famous. But when her latest record goes double platinum, Jenny’s suddenly one of the town’s biggest stars—and the center of a tabloid scandal connecting her with a pop star she’s barely even met. With paparazzi tracking her every move, Jenny flees to a remote mansion in Louisiana to write her next album. The only hiccup is the unexpected presence of a brooding young caretaker named Noah, whose foul mouth and snap judgments lead to constant bickering—and serious heat.

Noah really should tell Jenny that he’s Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, the owner of the estate where the feisty country singer has made her spoiled self at home. But the charade gives Noah a much-needed break from his own troubles, and before long, their verbal sparring is indistinguishable from foreplay. But as sizzling nights give way to quiet pillow talk, Noah begins to realize that Jenny’s almost as complicated as he is. To fit into each other’s lives, they’ll need the courage to face their problems together—before the outside world catches up to them.

REVIEW

Lauren Layne is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.  This story is so much more complex than your typical romance, but is still a quick easy read.  Layne manages to create complex and likable characters and make them feel real and relatable while still not being perfect.  I loved getting to know Jenny and Noah and would recommend this book to anyone who loves a funny romantic comedy.
