Book Review - Taken Home by Ruth Cardello

ABOUT THE BOOK

Playboy Mason Thorne is nothing short of complicated. Though he was a movie star at a young age, his life took a downward spiral when he turned to drugs after losing his mother. He cleaned up his act and became a senator but still keeps his distance from most everyone—including his own father. There are plenty of women around, but most are gone by morning.
Twenty-five-year-old Chelle Landon thinks she must be the last virgin in Texas. She’s worried if she doesn’t remedy it soon, she’ll stay one forever. She attends yet another small-town wedding where the last single man her age is officially off the market, until sexy politician Mason Thorne appears. He’s the answer to her prayers, if one can pray for something that decadent.
He needs a cover story, not another lover. Chelle’s on a mission to lose her virginity, no matter what. Will he break her heart or will she heal his?

REVIEW

Ruth Cardello can always be counted on to write a good story with complex characters.  Unexperienced Chelle isn't quite as naive as the "virgin" character is often portrayed, and her direct spunky character is refreshing.  Mason isn't just your typical  rich and powerful character either and seeing him fall under Chelle's spell is delightful.

While this book is the third in a series, it could easily be read as a stand alone and you wouldn't really notice.  For those who did read the earlier books, there are several moments throughout with the characters you've fallen in love with.  I recommend this book for anyone who loves a story about friendship, adventure, and of course a good romance!

Book Review - Desire After Dark by Marie Force

ABOUT THE BOOK

Tobias “Slim” Jackson has the perfect life as a pilot on Gansett Island in the summer and in Florida in the winter. He’s happiest when he’s in the air, or at least that was the case before last summer when he met Erin Barton, Gansett Island’s newest lighthouse keeper. Now he can’t seem to find his usual enthusiasm for flying, winter in the sunny South or anything that doesn’t include her.
Erin has been stuck on pause since she lost her twin brother. She’ll tell you herself that her life has been a hot mess since Toby died. After dropping out of law school, she’s flitted from one pointless job to another, existing rather than truly living. Then she comes to Gansett Island to take over as the new lighthouse keeper and meets Slim, who happens to share her beloved brother’s first name. That small coincidence is enough to convince Erin that she needs to spend more time with the dashing pilot—except for the fact that he’s spending the winter more than a thousand miles from her.
Now Slim’s come home to Gansett for the holidays and to hopefully pick up where he left off with Erin. He’s got twelve days before he’s due back in Florida to finish out the remainder of his winter obligations. A lot can happen in twelve days, but will it be enough to convince Erin that it’s time to start truly living again? Read Slim and Erin’s story and catch up with the rest of the Gansett Island cast in Desire After Dark!

REVIEW

The first book in the Marie Force's Gansett Island series was one of the first Romance novels I ever read. I had just received my first Kindle and was looking for free books to read in my spare time. I have always been a reader, but since college had trended towards biographies or historical books. Something about Maid for Love caught my eye and honestly my life has been forever changed. Since then I've started reading, blogging, and writing romance novels. It's been quite a journey over the past few years. This series has continued to be a big part of that journey. One of the things that Marie does well is mixing "real life" with romance. Everything isn't always perfect on Gansett Island. Sometimes a woman has a miscarriage. Sometimes a couple is unable to have children of their own. In this case, a woman who lost her twin brother is still struggling to find her place and risk loving and losing again. Erin has been the lighthouse keeper for a couple of books now (and may I editorialize and say best. job. ever!), and is really starting to find her place on the island and make friends when she meets Slim. Slim has been around for most of the series, but we've never really got to know him aside from the fact he is a reliable pilot. It was interesting to get to know him better and see him work to help Erin as they fell in love. Of course, all the rest of the Gansett cast was around, and my personal favorite couple of Owen and Laura had a fair amount of "screen time" as well. If you haven't ever read any of the Gansett books, it's about time you've caught up! If you have read them, be sure and check out the latest installment, which is everything we've come to expect from Marie Force, who never disappoints.

Q&A About Desire After Dark with Marie Force

GansettIsland_logo_update_1Q: Here we are at book fifteen in the Gansett Island Series. Does that boggle your mind?
Marie: It truly does. When I published Maid for Love back in 2011, I never could’ve imagined the incredible journey I was embarking upon. The series has sold nearly 2.5 million books, and readers have fallen in love with the McCarthy family and the rest of the Gansett Island community. It’s been amazing!
Q: What do you love best about Desire After Dark, Slim and Erin’s story?
Marie: Slim is a longtime member of the Gansett cast, as a McCarthy family friend and a pilot who is based on the island in the summer. Readers have often asked to hear more about him, so I was excited to write his story. His love interest, Erin, is a friend of another reader favorite, Jenny Martinez, and when Jenny leaves her post as lighthouse keeper to live with Alex in book 10, Erin takes her spot at the lighthouse. Erin and Jenny have a tragic connection—Erin’s twin brother, Toby, who was killed in 9/11 was Jenny’s fiancée. The two women have traveled a long and difficult path in the years since Toby’s death, and they are both still healing. Jenny’s story in Meant for Love is one of the readers’ favorites, and I think they will have a similar reaction to Erin’s story in Desire After Dark.
Q: While this series hits a lot of emotional notes for readers, it’s also known for being quite funny, too. Will readers find the humor in Desire After Dark?
Marie: Definitely! There are a couple of scenes in this book that I think readers will be talking about for a long time to come, one of them taken from my own life. I’ll let you try to figure out which one after you read the book. In Love After Dark, the ladies pull a hilarious prank on the guys, and in Desire, the men are out for revenge. You’ll have to read the book to see if they are successful. Suffice to say, I cried laughing a couple of times while writing it, imagining what the readers would have to say.
Q: What’s up next for the Gansett Island Series?
Marie: I’m very much looking forward to writing Light After Dark, which will be Mallory’s story. Readers met Mallory a couple of books ago, when she came to Gansett to find her biological father, who was none other than Big Mac McCarthy. I’ve got a great story planned for Mallory, and I can’t wait to write it.
Q: So, no end in sight for the Gansett Island Series?
Marie: Not as far as I can see. 🙂

Book Review - Best of My Love (Fools Gold) by Susan Mallery

ABOUT THE BOOK

An irresistible new love story from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fool's Gold series, set in a town Library Journal calls "so appealing, readers will want to start scoping out real estate."
To overcome her painful past, baker Shelby Gilmore goes on the hunt for a friend—a male friend—to convince her stubborn psyche that men can be trusted. But where in a town as small as Fool's Gold will the petite blonde find a guy willing to not date her?
Dark, charming Aidan Mitchell puts the "adventure" in Mitchell Adventure Tours…and into the beds of his many willing female tourists. Until he realizes he's inadvertently become that guy—the one-night Casanova—and worse, everyone in town knows it. Maybe Shelby's boy/girl experiment will help him see women as more than just conquests so he can change his ways and win back his self-respect.
As Aidan and Shelby explore the secret lives of men and women, the heat between them fires up the Fool's Gold rumor mill. If no one will believe they're just friends, maybe they should give the gossips something to really talk about!

REVIEW

Best of My Love is the latest in Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold series.  If you've made it this far in the series, you pretty much know what to expect.  A fun, light-hearted story, with fun characters in an absurdly quaint town.  This book delivers in all of these areas.  The town and the story are familiar and each year when the first is released it reminds me that summer is around the corner and I am reassured with my old friends in Fools Gold as well as the new ones that pop-up.  Mallery continues to create flawed, yet likable characters and continues to write new stories using the same winning formula.  If you are looking for an easy read to get you ready for summer, then this is the book for you!

Book Review - Tainted Deception by Aleya Michelle

ABOUT THE BOOK
Ivy Maisen thinks she knows exactly what type of guy Chase Hudson is — billionaire, extremely good looking, cocky as hell, and a guy that women salivate over...

But looks can be deceiving...

Underneath the tuxedo, luxurious demeanor and smooth character is a bad boy covered in tattoos, piercings, the lead singer in a band, and he owns three of the clubs that Ivy frequents.
Oh and he rides a Harley...

Will Ivy finally open her eyes and allow herself to see the real Chase or will she reject his alter-ego and refuse his advances again and again?
When desire is tainted with deception and lies, does that person become less desirable?

Could love be the one thing powerful enough to push them past the deception and down to the real person underneath the facade?

REVIEW
Let's start with the positives.  The love scenes were well written and accessible.  For those who blush easily, they are extremely explicit.  Like, "Holy hell, I hope this guy sitting next to me on a plane has bad eyesight," kind of explicit.

Now, the rest of it.  Tainted Deception's story arc is full manufactured conflicts and put together in a way that shows that the real effort was put into maximizing the love scenes and not the rest of the pages that string together the bits about boning.  At best, this is an average read, and if you find it for free on kindle, there are worse things you can do with your time.

A word for our heroine:  you don't need to rely on wispy shawls to cover your tats in front of your parent's business partners.  Get some major, serious ink and check out Kat Von D's cover-ups.  They even come in porcelain.  You're welcome, dear.
