Book Review- I Want to Hold Your Hand by Marie Force

ABOUT THE BOOK
For the Abbott siblings, the Green Mountain state has always been an idyllic place to call home. But it isn’t until they open themselves up to love that they’ll truly discover how fulfilling life can be…

Almost seven years after losing her husband in Iraq, Hannah Abbott Guthrie isn’t sure she’s ready—or able—to move on, but the attentions of a lifelong friend are making her think about it for the first time. The memory of the sweet kiss she shared with Nolan Roberts hasn’t strayed far from her thoughts, but she also fears that pursuing something with him would mean betraying her husband’s memory.

Nolan has loved Hannah for years, but he’d been giving her the space she needed to heal from her devastating loss. Now, when an opportunity arises to show her how he feels, Nolan can’t resist, but he knows earning her love will take more than a kiss. Somehow he has to prove to Hannah that finding love twice in a lifetime is possible—and well worth risking her heart

REVIEW

The development of the story between Hannah and Nolan is done incredibly well.  I have come to expect great characters and story from Marie Force, but she outdoes herself this time.  I was crying uncontrollably twenty minutes into the book, which is a testament to the writing and how quickly I was able to connect with the characters.  A complicated love story between Hannah, who is a widow who isn't quite ready to move on and her husband’s close friend Nolan., this is also a story about family and friendship.

If you love Marie Force, read this.  If you've never read Marie Force, this is as good of a place as any to start!

Book Review - Hot Shot (Hostile Operations Team #5) by Lynn Raye Harris

ABOUT THE BOOK

Cool under pressure... Until now.

Hostile Operations Team sniper Jack "Hawk" Hunter is cool, methodical, and utterly lethal. Nothing rattles Jack's calm. But that was before he learned he fathered a child three years ago--a child who has just been kidnapped.

Gina Domenico is a superstar, a pop sensation with a string of hit records. But deep inside, she's still the lonely girl she's always been. When Jack saved her from an arms dealer, they spent three unforgettable days together waiting for rescue--and Gina fell hard for the sexy soldier before he walked away forever.

But now she needs his help and she'll do anything to get it. Though Jack can never forgive Gina for keeping his child from him, he'll do everything in his power--and HOT's--to bring their son home safely.

Nothing is what it seems, however, and their fates hang in the balance as someone else pulls the strings...and brings them ever closer to an explosive confrontation that could either save their son--or cost them everything.

REVIEW

This is a fast paced second chance romance.  It is the fifth book in the series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone.  The hero and the heroine were both well developed and interesting characters.  Gina’s struggle to find the balance between her private and public persona is fascinating, and seeing how her struggle affects her relationship with Jack makes the story work even better.  My only complaint about Jack is that he isn’t more upset about not knowing about his son for the past three years.  It is understandable that he’d have to put his anger aside to save their child, however I felt like he should be angrier about not knowing.  Obviously it’s hard to have a romance with a man who is that angry with the heroine, but it made the plot feel a little forced because of it.

The prologue made for an interesting stand-alone story in itself.  The author should consider including it in an anthology somewhere as well.

I was able to figure out who the villain was early on, but the mystery was still well done and not completely obvious.

Book Review - My First, My last by Lacey Silks

ABOUT THE BOOK

Fate has kept them apart for twenty years.
Their roads hadn't crossed and the stars didn't align until now...

Matured, more experienced, pierced, tattooed and hot as hell, Adrian steps back into Mia's life to reclaim his first love.

And the moment she sees him she can't even remember her own name.

Adrian Reed had always remained in Mia's heart. After all, he was her first boyfriend and the man she'd lost her virginity to, but that was twenty years ago. His sudden appearance at a bar, on a girls night out, has Mia acting like the fifteen year old girl she was when they parted.

But life now is not as simple as it was twenty years ago. With two kids, a hopeful ex-husband and new insecurities, Mia finds opening up to a new relationship more challenging.

Will she give her first love another chance, or will she push him away, this time for good?

REVIEW

I mostly liked this story, but I got really hung up on specific plot points that didn’t make sense to me and it hampered my ability to truly enjoy the book.  Did they just have one summer together or two?  He was obviously with someone else when she came back, so I’m assuming they weren't together the second summer, but she seems really forgiving if that were the case.

Review - The Whisky Laird’s Bed by Donna MacMeans

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lady of temperance, laird of temptation...

Claire Starke has no illusions about her future. As her father repeatedly reminded her, her looks would never win a husband, and her poverty makes her an even less suitable wife. Luckily, her comrades at the Rake Patrol have given her joy and comfort—enough to quell the dull ache for a family of her own. So, when fellow member Faith runs off to the Highlands, investigating a whisky distiller advertising for an English wife, Claire sees no choice but to save her friend from this intemperate and lustful man. But she didn’t expect the Highland laird to be so intriguing, or to begin questioning her own restraint…

Still reeling from the distillery accident which left him scarred and shaken, Cameron MacPherson has no plans to marry, even if his mother is determined to tie him to one of the British milquetoasts parading through his castle. But when Claire bursts upon the scene, hurling accusations about alcohol and ruin, he finds the reformer fascinating. The fact that she stands up to him when others shrink away is more than charming—this one has spirit and, to be honest, he wouldn’t mind drinking a deep draught of her

REVIEW

Lady of temperance, laird of temptation...

This is the second book in The Rake Patrol series, but could easily be read as a stand-alone.  Claire is an interesting character that is strong willed and direct, in a world where women are expected to be compliant and dainty.  Cameron is a three dimensional hero, who is strong and vulnerable, and is more interested in his duty to his family and town than he is finding a wife.

The true conflict is that she is active in the temperance in London movement and he owns a whisky distillery in Scotland.

This was a quick and fun read and interesting story.  I’d recommend it to anyone who loves romance, even those who don’t typically read historical romance.

Book Review -Stay the Night by Kate Perry

ABOUT THE BOOK

Photographer Titania Summerhill knew better than to let her mentor talk her into being his “friend with benefits.” Now that she refuses to date him, he has her blacklisted from selling her pictures to any magazine bigger than Cat Fancy.

One magazine editor is willing to give her another shot—but only if she does a photo essay on the most reclusive football star in Britain: Ian MacNiven.

Since a near-fatal accident that may end his career, Ian’s refused to do any media appearances, but Titania’s determined to get her man. She wrangles an invitation to stay with him, never expecting that the wounded sports star would distract her from what she wants.

Except what she wants is out of focus, and Ian’s the only thing in her viewfinder. Will she complete the assignment despite him, or respect his wish for privacy and lose her hard-won career

REVIEW

Kate Perry always creates funny and interesting characters, and Titania and Cole did not disappoint.  Titania is a fun but strong character who goes after what she wants, just like her sisters before her.  I LOVED that Cole was a romance novel reader too… and the fun easter egg that he was reading one of Kate’s books.

If you have enjoyed the other Summerhill books, you’ll love this one too.

Kate’s the bestselling author of the Laurel Heights Novels, as well as the Family and Love and Guardians of Destiny series. She’s been translated into several languages and is quite proud to say she’s big in Slovenia. All her books are about strong, independent women who just want love.

Book Review - Taken by Love (Love in Bloom) by Melissa Foster

ABOUT THE BOOK

Daisy Honey fled Trusty, Colorado, after years of battling rumors sparked by her gorgeous looks and lust-inducing name. Now a physician on the brink of a promising career, she reluctantly returns home when her father is injured in a farming accident. Daisy expects the small-town girls who hurt her in the past to take cheap shots again--but she's completely unprepared for a run-in with tall, dark, and wickedly sexy Luke Braden, the only man who has ever stood up for her--and the man she's never forgotten.

Luke Braden is handsome, wealthy, and the best damn gypsy horse breeder in the Midwest. After a restless youth, he's finally ready to settle down--only connecting with women is nothing like connecting with horses, and he's never met a woman worth the energy. After an arrest in a neighboring town, Luke's past comes back to haunt him, and he realizes that his inability to find love runs deeper than he ever imagined.

A chance encounter sweeps Luke and Daisy into a world of passion. For the first time ever, Luke feels a connection, but Daisy's life in Trusty is anything but permanent, and Luke can't manage a future until he puts his past to rest.

REVIEW

I loved getting back to the Braden family in Colorado in this book, however if you haven’t read her Melissa Foster’s other series, you won’t feel like you are missing anything.

The romance between Daisy and Luke feels a little rushed at first, and she seems a little too trusting of a man who had treated her badly in the past.  However I did enjoy the character development between the two.

Book Review - The Best Man for the Job by Lucy King

ABOUT THE BOOK

The wedding guest from her past...

For Celia Forrester, Marcus Black--her brother's best friend--was always totally off-limits. Especially after The Night That Nearly Happened. It was years ago, but Celia remembers it for all the worst reasons! But now, Marcus is back in the picture--he's the best man at her brother's wedding and more gorgeous than ever!

It's all kinds of inappropriate, but giving in to temptation looks like the best way for Celia to get Marcus out of her system. But their one night comes with consequences. And this time, it won't be fifteen years until they have to face them...but nine months!

REVIEW

This book used two major romance tropes in it.  The first was girl has a crush on her brother’s best friend.  The second was an unplanned pregnancy.  The book was mostly predictable, although there were some hard conversations in the book that I refreshingly surprised occurred in a romance novel.

While the plot wasn’t anything new, the writing was well done and the characters were interesting.  It’s worth picking up if you are looking for a quick and easy read.

Book Review - If I Stay by Tamera Morgan

ABOUT THE BOOK

After losing his high-adrenaline career as a Hollywood stunt driver, he's had to tuck his tail between his legs and take up employment as a chauffeur for the Montgomerys, a wealthy hotelier family.

Amy Sanders has returned home to Ransom Creek to take over her mother's former position as nanny to the Montgomerys—bringing her close to dashing Jake Montgomery once again. She grew up with a major crush on Jake, and it's not easy to leave those feelings behind, even though her friendship with the hard-edged family chauffeur, Ryan, has a sizzling undercurrent of undeniable attraction.

Amy's determined to prove to Ryan that life at Montgomery Manor isn't all bad, but each time they draw closer Jake swoops in. Amy is torn between two men—and two worlds. And Ryan is rapidly coming to learn that if he wants to make Amy his, he'll have to prove to her that life downstairs can be everything they both want.

REVIEW

This was a nice summer read that has more depth than many, but not too much to weight me down when I want something light and romantic.  The pull between Amy and Ryan is easy to understand, and the conflict between Amy and the family that has adopted her is easy to understand and sympathize with.

The point of view occasionally switches around and it gets confusing at times, but overall the book is well written and the author does a great job of putting some overreaching themes about what it means to be family that do not get in the way of telling a great love story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tamara Morgan is a contemporary romance author of humorous, heartfelt stories with flawed heroes and heroines designed to get your hackles up and make your heart melt. Her long-lived affinity for romance novels survived a B.A. degree in English Literature, after which time she discovered it was much more fun to create stories than analyze the life out of them.

Whether building Victorian dollhouses, consuming mass quantities of coffee and wine, or crying over cheesy 1950s musicals, Tamara commits to her flaws like every good heroine should. She lives in the Inland Northwest with her husband, daughter, and variety of household pets and only occasionally complains about the weather.
