Book Review - Safe in His Arms by Melody Anne

Image
ABOUT THE BOOK Can a California transplant survive Montana’s deep snows?  New York Times  and  USA TODAY bestselling author Melody Anne breaks the ice between a sexy fireman and a brand-new teacher in this steamy holiday tale—originally published in the sizzling anthology  Baby, It’s Cold Outside —which launched her popular Unexpected Heroes series. Natalie Duncan is thrilled to get her first teaching job, but southern California didn’t prepare her for winter in Montana—or for gorgeous fire chief Hawk Winchester. For a man dedicated to putting out fires, Hawk really knows how to add heat to Natalie’s life, especially when he’s rescuing her from compromising situations. A man this strong and capable should know exactly what to do when a lady is trapped under the mistletoe. Suddenly Natalie’s blue Christmas is glowing red-hot... REVIEW I have read several books by Melody Anne, and I have to say this wasn't one of my favorites.  The characters and the story just felt a little

Book Review - Controlled Burn by Stacy Shannon

ABOUT THE BOOK Rick Gullotti lives the good life. He fights fires, dates beautiful women—though none long enough so they cast wistful glances at jewelry stores—and has great friends. And thanks to helping out the elderly couple who own his building, his rent is low. But when concerns about their health lead him to contact their only son, his life starts getting away from him. Jessica Broussard has no interest in leaving sunny San Diego or her cushy corner office for Boston, but her father—who happens to be her boss—dispatches her to deal with the grandparents she's never met. She's unprepared for the frigid winter, loving relatives who aren't the monsters she's been led to believe, and the hot, scruffy firefighter who lives upstairs. At first, Jessica is determined to get back to her comfortable life as quickly as possible. All she has to do is talk her grandparents into selling their monstrosity of a house and moving to a retirement community. But she underesti

Book Review - Under the Kissing Tree by Kate Perry

Image
ABOUT THE BOOK For the first time in ten years, wallpaper designer Eliza Westwood accepts her grandmother's invitation to go home to Paris for Christmas.  Big mistake.  It seemed ideal to Eliza: go to a city she loves, and hide from the heartbreaks of the past year. But her grandmother is determined to teach her that the holidays hold the magic they once held, and that life is about love.  Eliza knows better though, and nothing can make her believe in stardust again. Not Paris's lights, not her grandmother's fruitcake, and certainly not Xavier, the boy next door who's, now, very much a man. REVIEW This was a sweet Christmas romance.  It was an easy read, but Eliza was easy to get to know and fall for.  The style was a great fit for a short story and kept the story flowing at a nice pace. OVERALL RATING - 5 STARS! MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy ABOUT THE AUTHOR These are a few of Kate's favorite things... - The giggle of balloons as t

Book Review - The Accidental Engagement

Image
ABOUT THE BOOK Oops . . . It started as a regular night for New York City restaurant hostess Ivy Sinclair, until a rowdy customer turned out to be world famous playboy Jack Everett. Thanks to the paparazzi, now the world thinks they’re a couple—which couldn’t be farther from the truth. But when a brooding, sexy businessman offers her a simply irresistible proposition…   Uh oh . . . Just when cutthroat venture capitalist Daniel Gladwell thought he’d never close the deal with an Italian conglomerate, a simple mistake becomes the perfect opportunity. All he has to do is convince Ivy to pretend to be Jack’s fiancée while on a business trip to Italy to offset Jack’s bad boy reputation. As long as Daniel doesn’t sabotage the plan by claiming the tempting waitress for himself . . .   Oh yes! It was supposed to be a business only arrangement. But in the magic of the Tuscan countryside, neither Ivy nor Daniel can fight the attraction building between them. In the world’s most romantic setti

Book Review - The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss by Max Wirestone

Image
ABOUT THE BOOK For anyone who has ever geeked out about something and for fans of  The Guild, New Girl, Scott Pilgrim, Big Bang Theory, Veronica Mars . Meet Dahlia Moss, the reigning queen of unfortunate decision-making in the St. Louis area. She is unemployed, broke, and on her last bowl of ramen. But that's all about to change.  Before Dahlia can make her life any messier on her own she's offered a job. A job that she's woefully under-qualified for. A job that will lead her to a murder, an MMORPG, and possibly a fella (or two?). REVIEW This books biggest strength is the humor and the characters.  While it is a bit weaker in actual story, I wanted to keep reading because as a nerdy girl myself, I couldn't help but laugh out loud constantly.  Wirestone does a remarkable job creating characters that are memorable and charming and succeeds in the difficult job of consistently writing humor.  This is a true romantic comedy, and if you are looking for an off-beat ro
