Book Review - Hot Toy by Jennifer Crusie

ABOUT THE BOOK

Previously published in the anthology Santa, Baby, HOT TOY is now available as a standalone e-story for the first time!

Mayhem ensues under the mistletoe as a determined shopper grabs the very last hot toy action figure off the shelf, only to find herself plunged into the middle of a real-life spy game and in the arms of a sexy secret agent...

REVIEW

I love, love, love Jennifer Crusie, and I was so happy to see that there was a “new” book by her to read!  This is actually a previously published book by the author, but the story holds up well.  Even though this is a novella, the story flows well and she somehow includes a sweet romance along with a mystery.  I recommend this to not only Jennifer Crusie fans, but also anyone looking for a well written Christmas story that stands apart from the usually sappy stories out there.

OVERALL RATING - 5 STARS!

MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jennifer Crusie was researching her dissertation on the differences in the way men and women tell stories when she got sidetracked into writing romance novels.

Her first book was published in 1993 (which pretty much finished off any hope of her getting that PhD) and her twenty-second book, Maybe This Time, came out in August of 2010, all of which she considers a minor miracle, especially since she is also a New York Times, USA Today and Publisher's Weekly bestseller and a two-time Rita award winner.

Jenny is currently working on her new Liz Danger mystery series. She is a very happy woman.

EVER AFTER
Ava Callahan wants desperately to believe in love everlasting. But when Brian McCabe walks back into her life and upsets her carefully organized world, her commitment to perfection makes it hard to accept the love that's right in front of her. Will it take a night in the Christmas Cottage for Ava and Brian to find their happy ending?

REVIEW

Two short stories that follow two best friends and how they meet the love of their lives.

The Christmas Cottage is a great short story.  I enjoyed the characters and how circumstances force them together and make them face their mutual attraction.  This story stresses the importance of honesty and communication in making a lasting relationship; something I heartily approve of.

Ever After is another great short story which focuses on the best friend from The Christmas Cottage, but a year later.  This story stresses how the pursuit of perfection can blind you to the here and now.  A great story with lessons learned.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan's Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40's to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she's not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.

Book Review - Jingle Bell Harbor by Tracy Brogan

ABOUT THE BOOK

As assistant buyer for the world’s second-largest Christmas store, Kelsey Parker feels like a holiday harlot. She’s contractually obligated to promote the yuletide season. All. Year. Long. And it’s taking a toll on her spirit. But when her clueless, self-absorbed boyfriend goes on their long-anticipated romantic vacation—without her!—Kelsey is beyond disappointed to find herself tromping through the Bell Harbor snow instead of lounging on a tropical beach.

Drew Hampton is considered quite a catch among the Bell Harbor bachelorettes, but when his high school dream girl, Kelsey Parker, shows up at his grandfather’s Christmas tree lot complaining about her love life, he decides it’s long past time to get her under the mistletoe himself.

As things heat up between the two, a surprise visitor arrives, making Kelsey an offer she can’t quite believe. Now she must decide what matters most, and she just may discover the key to her happiness.

REVIEW

Kelsey and Drew were such fun characters!   The story was so much fun to read and I really enjoyed the banter bewteen Drew and Kelsey.  Both characters were easy to like and root for… except for one thing.  Kelsey was still technically dating someone else.  This story would have been perfect if she hadn’t been technically cheating on someone else.  I couldn’t ever really get past that one point.  I also found the end a little abrupt.  I always enjoy Tracy Brogan’s books, and I think if this had been a longer story some of the things that bothered me would have worked out on their own, but due to the short nature of the story it rushed everything else along.

Book Review - Breaking the Declan Brothers #2 Slate by Kelly Gendron

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Some boys will keep it, some will break it, and some boys, they just won't want it. You gotta be careful who you give your heart to..." ~ Slate Declan

First loves, we all got them. Mine is Slate Declan. He was kind, gentle, and caring. Still, he managed to break my heart. So I put miles between us, and eventually, my heart healed.
I haven't seen Slate in years, but a couple friends and I are going back to the Bayou for the summer. While I'm visiting my hometown, I'm going to look up Slate Declan. And I plan to break his heart, just as he did mine. I'll remind him of what he has lost, and then I'll prove to him that I've moved on. It should be real easy, right?
Well, let me tell you, Slate Declan is not the same guy that I left behind. And there's another problem. How do you break someone's heart when they no longer have one?

REVIEW

I really enjoyed how the author used flashbacks to tell the story of Rayna and Slate.  While the sexy parts of this story are very adult themed, the story itself was actually very sweet, starting when they were kids meeting for the first time in elementary school and following into adolescence.  Now they are adults and a lot of life experience has occurred since they were last together.  The author does a great job of creating a story that is a slow burn love story and still creatively puts very sexy scenes into the book. I would recommend this book to you if you like sexy stories with interesting plot and characters.

Need you for Always by Marina Adair

ABOUT THE BOOK

Emerson “Emi” Blake dropped out of culinary school to care for her ailing mother, but she has bigger dreams than running St. Helena’s most popular pita cart. First on the menu: upgrade to a gourmet food truck. A new part-time job as a personal chef will definitely provide the funds, but it also forces her into close contact with her one and only one-night stand, Dax Baudouin, who’s daring her to try a second taste.
Former army Ranger Dax has a clear mission: come home, get healed, and get gone. Yet Emi’s tough-girl exterior and hidden soft side are even harder to resist than her mouthwatering baklava. After years of battles, he knows better than to try and rescue anyone—not that she’ll let him get close enough to try. Truth is, Dax is starting to think that Emi’s the one person who can save him…if he can just persuade her to give him another shot.

REVIEW

I love, love, love Dax and Emi.  They both are so troubled and messed up, but while that influences their lives, they learn together that is doesn’t define who they are.  This book has so much heart and humor, it is a great read if you are looking to get away from reality for a while and are looking for a well-written and thought-provoking story.

The Secret Son by Joan Kilby

ABOUT THE BOOK

A birthday card out of the blue from his estranged father sends successful Seattle marketing man Alex Chernoff on a detour to Cherry Lake in search of answers about his past. A day, maybe two, to tie up loose strings and he’ll be out of there, heading for Mexico, margaritas and blondes in bikinis.

Emma Stanhope is all too familiar with hot, rich, entitled guys like Alex. They never hang around for long, especially not for a Plain Jane like herself. No problem. She’s smart and logical, like any good scientist, and knows better than to lose her heart.

What Emma doesn’t count on is chemistry—of the romantic kind. What Alex doesn’t count on is meeting the girl who’ll make him want to change his ways. But when he learns that he’s a secret from his father’s real family, he can’t stay in Cherry Lake… even if he wants to.

Will love be enough to convince Alex to stay… for good?

REVIEW

I really enjoyed getting to know Alex and Emma in this story.  Emma is feisty and challenges playboy Alex, which leads to some exciting and entertaining scenes between the characters.  The story development is well done as Alex pieces together the mystery behind his family and trying to figure out if he wants a relationship with them.  This book has the perfect mix of serious and funny, producing a heartwarming story about what makes a family.
