Release Day Spotlight - Protecting the Enemy by Christy Newton

Protecting the Enemy Synopsis:

Julianna Fox was made for her job. Or so she is told. The only memory Julianna has of her past is after the explosion. She was a nameless victim until a man pulled her out of the darkness and gave her new life. A new purpose, because anything is better than being no one. When she is about to eliminate her next mark something stops her. The moment Julianna makes eye contact with Reid Castleton, she has a flashback of her forgotten past. How does she know the man? And why can’t she follow through with her assignment?
Expert assassin, Reid Castleton, has been told to kill the only woman he ever loved if he wants to live. When he finds his fiancée, he can’t go through with the hit, even if it means losing his own life. Either she can’t remember who she is or is damn good at acting.
Neither one knows who to trust. Both make a truce until they can find out why the leader of ETE 7 wants them both dead. What they uncover is a long line of lies and deception that started the moment Julianna was conceived. Will love conquer all or will fear make them do the unthinkable?

Excerpt:

Julianna reached across the table and handed Reid a fortune cookie. He crushed the yellowish-orange shell, then read the strip of white paper aloud. If you want it… get it. Reid shrugged and smiled. He walked around the table and grabbed Julianna by her legs, lifting her up over his shoulder. Her hair hung a curtain over her face. Dizzy with laughter, the blood rushed to her head.
Julianna bolted upright in bed and rubbed her eyes. Had the dream been just a dream or was it a memory? Her life was like a yard sale puzzle missing most of its pieces.
Reid sat on the edge of the mattress. “Hey, sleeping beauty. You were laughing in your sleep.”
She felt her face heat up. “I was?”
He touched the tip of her nose as if nothing had happened between them.
“Yeah, it was kind of cute.”
Julianna forced herself to roll her eyes instead of smile. She wouldn’t tell him about her silly dream which is probably all it was. “Great, why were you watching me sleep?”
“I wasn’t, but I did come over here when you started laughing. It was quite entertaining.”
She tossed the covers aside and got up. “I’m so glad I could amuse you.” Exasperated, but also captivated with the man, she stomped into the bathroom to take a shower. As she took off her clothes she closed her eyes. She ached to feel the way she had in her dream. She wanted Reid. God help her she wanted him bad.

Book Review - Once Upon a Dream by Kate Perry

ABOUT THE BOOK

Summer Welles wants the fairy tale.

The illegitimate daughter of Reginald Summerhill, the Earl of Amberlin, she listened to her mother's stories about the Summerhill girls all her life. In her mind, Summer was part of the stories too—living in the castle, wearing fancy dresses, and falling in love with Prince Charming.

Her wish came true. Mostly. She lives in the Summerhill mansion. She has stepsisters—nice ones who don't make her clean the chimney. She even has a magical wedding dress waiting for her special day. The only thing missing is the perfect man.

She knows exactly who he is, and she's going to confront him at the annual Midnight Masquerade Ball. What Summer didn't count on was mistaking a masked frog for her prince.

Once she kisses the mysterious man, he won't go away. And he's not sweet or charming or princely. He seems more interested in ravishing her rather than riding off into the sunset with her, and—worse—she's tempted to let him.
Her fairy tale at stake, Summer's faced with her own quest that neither frog nor prince can rescue her from: sacrifice her Happily Ever After, or turn her back on the one man who makes her feel alive?

REVIEW

One thing I've grown to love about Kate Perry's books is that there are always several different stories going on at once.  In Once Upon a Dream, the man story involves Summer and Jon, but there is also the story of Jacqueline throughout as well.  Jacqueline's story is really the glue between all of the Summerhill stories, not just because she is the Matriarch of the family.  In this book she realizes that what she really knows is "family" which is also the theme through all of the Summerhill books.

I look forward to reading the next book, Viola's story, and am anxiously awaiting the resolution of Bea and Luca's story that has been on the back burner since the first Summerhill book.

Review - Blue Shoes Volume 1 by J.J. Knight

ABOUT THE BOOK
Jess Rivera is a young music executive engaged to Morris Music's hottest rock star: Dylan Wolf.

She wears a gorgeous diamond ring on her finger, and everyone wants to know when they're getting married.

Between Dylan's screaming fans who chase him everywhere, plus their glamorous L.A. lifestyle, the couple can hardly get a moment alone together.

That's why they're planning a secret wedding.

But when a visit to a bridal gown boutique goes terribly wrong, all their romantic plans are ruined.

Sometimes it feels like the whole world is against the couple's love. Is it just bad luck, or is someone trying to destroy Dylan Wolf?

REVIEW

If I hadn't read the previous series with these characters, I'd really hate Dylan. I trust that all is not as it seems, which has been the case with J.J. Knight's previous books, but right now the Dylan in this book doesn't seem to align with the Dylan we met before. As always, Knight does a great job of crafting a story that makes it hard to wait for the next installment.

Promise Me This by Sarah Ashley Jones
New Adult Contemporary
Welcome to the South - where the tea is sweet and the accents are sweeter. This Southern way of life is all Charlie has ever known. It’s not until she loses the only person who pushed her to break free of the Southern Belle mold that she starts living the life she needs and not the life her parents forced on her.

Charlie never thought that a trip to pack up her brother’s apartment would leave her feeling even more unsettled about the grainy details of her brother’s death. Her quest for information leads her straight to his old hangout and into arms of Jhett, who suspiciously knows more about her situation than he ever should.

Only a few questions remain - Can you trust someone based on their word alone? And if you make a promise, how far will you go to keep it?

I'm Sarah! I'm a total goofball. This is pretty much the most important thing to know about me. Just kidding! I may be an adult but I have the heart of a child. I know when to be serious but I'm a hard worker with serious control issues, and maybe a splash of wit and a side of sassy. I'm addicted to Coca-Cola, obsessed with cupcakes, and also a Chapstick hoarder.

When I'm not writing, I'm probably rounding up my crazy clan of four dogs or adventuring around town with my husband who encourages me to embrace me inner outdoors woman by fishing, camping, canoeing, and hiking.

I'm a huge nerd, so please feel free to send me a friends request, email, or leave a comment. I will jump for joy any time of of those things happen. I am blessed beyond belief with all the love and support I have received this past year and I thank all of you for that!

Book Review - Accidently Married by Victorine E. Lieske

ABOUT THE BOOK

From the New York Times best selling author of NOT WHAT SHE SEEMS.

Madison Nichols, aspiring actress, is floundering. Her rent is due and she needs a job. Desperately. After getting a tip about an open position, she rushes to Jameson Technologies and meets CEO Jared Jameson. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, she is put in the awkward position of pretending to be his girlfriend. Not the job she was applying for. And when she finds out Jared lied to her to get what he wanted, she decides to get back at him. In front of his family.

Jared is stunned when Madison announces they are getting married. She pushed her revenge too far. How can he tell them it’s all a lie? And when his sick aunt asks them to be married before she dies, Madison comes up with a hair-brained plan to hire an actor and stage a fake wedding.

What they both don’t know is Jared’s father has found out about the fake wedding. And he’s got his own hair-brained plan.

This is a sweet romance, appropriate for any age.

REVIEW

This a good summer read if you are looking for something light, funny, and romantic.  It’s probably not your cup of tea if you are looking for something innovative and different.
This was a cute story, but I had a little bit of a problem understanding why Jared was going along with everything so easily.  Madison would be difficult to put up with, especially if you just met her, so I had a hard time believing he wouldn’t have kicked her to the door the first day he met her.  Instead he just seemed mildly irritated.

Overall I felt the book was technically well written, even if the story has been done before and the characters were a little irritating.

Congressman Chambers is not a man to let such an offense slide, and he has the resources to get even and to get what he wants.

In Australia sparks are flying between Cordelia and Aiden, but multiple attempts on Aiden’s life are made while Cordelia is with him, and he realizes he must put a stop to the madness before he loses the thing he values most

REVIEW

This story just didn’t work for me.  Aiden was a jerk and it was difficult for me to root for him to get together with Cordie, no matter how long she had been in love with him.  I can enjoy books involving domineering men, but Aiden did not seem to have a caring or compassionate side to him.  What was worse was that everyone just let him do it.  His sister, his brothers… everyone just acted like this was completely normal.  I liked Cordie a little less the more she allowed it to continue.

"I was a slow, slow reader," Julie says. "I hated it." At the age of 11, her mother discovered her daughter's secret and promptly enrolled her in a summer remedial reading class. "When I got there the nuns immediately realized I wasn't even remedial, and Sister Mary Elizabeth was drafted to tutor me." Julie came to know Sister Elizabeth as a friend and mentor. "She taught me to love the written word. Of course, some of the vocabulary was beyond me so I had to look up a lot of words. I sat on a large dictionary -- got up, looked up a word, sat back down." Julie jumped up and down like a jack-in-the-box all summer.

Julie married young and had three children. She began her writing career when the youngest of her three children entered school. Book Review - Accidentally Married on Purpose by Rachel Harris

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sherry Robicheaux loves men. She loves love. And she loves an adventure. So when she meets a mysterious man while working backstage at a country music concert in Vegas, she’s all about what’s happened in Vegas staying there.

Country music superstar Tyler Blue just wants a weekend of anonymity…though there’s something about the spunky waitress with the streaks of purple hair that tempts him like no other. Until the next morning, when they both wake up with fuzzy memories…and rings on their fingers.

Convincing Sherry to maintain the ruse for his public image isn't the hardest part—it’s reminding himself that their time spent playing husband and wife in her small town of Magnolia Springs can’t last. Tyler’s first love will always be music—and the road is no place for a sweet down home girl

REVIEW

This is the third book in the series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone.  Tyler and Sherry have a lot of chemistry, and the characters are written incredibly well.  Rachel Harris has an easy flow to her writing that makes it easy to get to know the characters and feel along with them.   She takes a writing trope that has been done a million times and makes it her own and the result was a fun, sexy, and entertaining novel.

Review

The wait was worth it!  This was a great conclusion to Haley and Bentley’s story.  Shawnte has a wonderful ability to write a realistic and engaging story, and I was not at all disappointed.  I love how both characters were not perfect and watching them grow in order to be the people they needed to be to make things work.

The secondary characters were fun to read about as well.  Getting to know Bentley’s family better made understanding Bentley easier and made him more relatable.  I would like to have spent more time with Haley’s family as well, but what glipse we did have helped understand her a little bit better as well.

I would definitely recommend this series and all of the books by Shawnte Borris.  She has a unique voice when writing that makes it easy to get lost in her stories.
