Cover Reveal - No Ordinary Bloke by Mary Whitney

Title: No Ordinary Bloke
Author: Mary Whitney
Genre: Contemporary Romance 18+
Publication Date: August 2014
Cover Design: Jada D'Lee Designs
Event Organized by: Literati Author Services,Inc.

Synopsis: I’m not a philosophical kind of bloke, but I know something about luck. A childhood on the wrong side of advantage will teach you that. It’s all a matter of chance. It’s both your circumstances and the chances you take. So I've always been a gambler and a ladies' man — they love me and I love them. Now I've found one like no other — an American, Allison Wright. When I met her, the fates were on my side, but too soon I learned the odds were against me.

About the Author: Mary Whitney blames Laura Ingalls Wilder and Margaret Mitchell for her obsession with romance novels. At an early age, Mary fell in love with the Little House series and its dreamy hero, Almanzo Wilder, who only wanted Laura to be Laura. Like many women, Mary later graduated to the ultimate, tall and dark bad boy, Rhett Butler, who loved Scarlett despite her flaws. Mary has lived around the U.S., and after a first career in the non-profit world and politics, she's settled in Northern California with her husband and daughters. She spends her days writing characters she hopes somehow capture the romance of Rhett and Scarlett and Almanzo and Laura. She's a firm believer in what Rhett says to Scarlett: "You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

Book Review - The Millionaire Affair by Jessica Lemmon

ABOUT THE BOOK

Millionaire ad executive Landon Downey has a policy: no romantic relationships allowed. So when he's saddled with his six-year-old nephew for a week, he doesn't think twice about asking Kimber Reynolds to act as live-in nanny. What he doesn't expect is the undeniable attraction to the woman he hasn't seen since they were kids. And not only does she like him back-she suggests they work their way down a list of extracurricular activities in the bedroom. How can he resist?

Kimber wants to prove once and for all that she can love 'em and leave 'em with the best of them. All she has to do is keep her sixteen-year crush on Landon out of the equation. No problem . . . until she realizes she may not be the only one whose heart has gotten completely tangled up in their no-strings agreement.

REVIEW

The relationship between Landon and Kimber is well paced, if not predictable.  Most of us do not read this genre for the surprise though, and Jessica Lemmon does a nice job writing a story we’ve all ready before in a slightly different way.  The characters are both likable and are easy to relate with.  I also really liked the fact that the author calls out Landon’s sometimes too subtle sense of humor by making it difficult at times for even Kimber to get it.  It gave Lemmon a way to make sure the reader caught Landon’s humor without having to overtly tell the reader.

This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone.  This was the first in the series I have read, and I never felt like I was missing anything.

"Hot and sexy romance that will make you laugh out loud." Mimi Strong, New York Times bestselling author of the the Peaches Monroe Trilogy

"Legal Briefs is equal parts sexy and funny. N.M. Silber is becoming my go to author when I want to laugh and swoon at the same time." Sawyer Bennett, USA Today bestselling author of the Legal Affairs serial.

NOTICE: This book contains explicit descriptions of sexual situations and adult language. It is intended for readers over the age of 18.

REVIEW

I loved Legally Wed, but it definitely not a standalone in this series.  That said, if you haven’t read the previous books, stop reading this and go back and start from book 1 The Law of Attraction.  I mean it, if you love romantic comedies, you will not be disappointed.

If you are still reading, then I know you are already a fan of these books and N.M. Silber.  Everything I loved about the previous books, the characters, the witty dialogue, the crazy situations… they are all here.  Usually when the guy gets the girl, the book is over and we just assume the happily ever after.  This time we actually get to see the couple AFTER they admit they love each other, and see what happens after the engagement and through the wedding planning.

This felt like a love letter to the fans, in a good way, and I left me wanting to go back and read the books again.

Book Review - Until We Touch by Susan Mallery

ABOUT THE BOOK

After a family tragedy, former football hero Jack McGarry keeps the world at arm's length—a challenge now that his PR firm has moved to neighborly Fool's Gold, California.

Larissa Owens knows where she stands—Jack sees her as just another one of the guys. No matter what her heart wishes, Jack's her boss, not her boyfriend. But then Larissa's big secret is revealed…by her mother!

When Jack discovers the truth about Larissa's feelings, her touch suddenly becomes tantalizing, and he's not sure he wants to resist. But if he gives in to desire, heartache is sure to follow. Friendship or true love—will Jack go for the ultimate play?

REVIEW

I’ve been looking forward to reading Larissa and Jack’s story for several books, and I wasn’t disappointed. This could work as a standalone, but I’d suggest going back two books before reading to completely understand the characters. Plenty of background is given about Jack and Larissa, but enough time is spent with Sam and Taryn that I feel like the reader would enjoy the book more having read their stories.

I was frustrated more with the rest of the town than I was with the main characters. It seemed as though it should have been obvious to everyone else in Fools Gold that Jack was in love with Larissa too, but everyone seemed to only pick-up on her feelings. What guy would let their assistant take over their house with animals, sometimes without permission, if they weren’t completely in love? I’m pretty sure my husband would have more of an issue than Jack does, and we’ve been married for over ten years!

The end felt rushed, but I’ve kind of come to expect that with Susan Mallery books

Book Review - Flames of Love (Love in Bloom: The Remingtons, Book 3) by Melissa Foster

ABOUT THE BOOK

As one of New York’s Finest, firefighter Cash Ryder is always prepared. When a woman’s car skids off the side of a mountain during a snowstorm, he’s there to rescue her. Cash is totally focused on the woman’s well-being, but within minutes of getting her to safety, he realizes that he’s nowhere near prepared for the heat that rolls off of sensual, smart-mouthed, and stubborn Siena Remington.

As a model, Siena Remington has dated some of the wealthiest, most handsome men in the industry, and she’s made peace with the idea that most men are just looking for eye candy and they wouldn’t know how to romance a woman to save their lives. When she’s rescued by a tall, handsome stranger, she thinks that maybe, just maybe, she’s found her own real-life romantic fairy tale—until he opens his mouth and everything that comes out is gruff, ornery, and aggravatingly sexy.

Thrown together during an annual firehouse calendar photo shoot, the passion between Cash and Siena sizzles, and neither one knows how to control the flames. After an evening of verbal sparring followed by a sinfully sensual night, their darkest secrets are revealed—and so is Cash’s warm, romantic heart. But Siena’s secret might be too much for big, strong, always-prepared Cash to handle—and Siena is forced to choose between a man who’s everything she’s ever dreamed of and an opportunity of a lifetime.

REVIEW

This was another sweet romance by Melissa Foster. I've been wanting to read Siena's story since the Remington's were introduced, and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the dynamic between cranky but sexy Cash and the down-to-earth model Siena. The characters are well developed and when they face tough choices, they stay true to themselves and do not immediately chose love over their careers.

Book Review - Waking Up Pregnant By Mira Lyn Kelly

ABOUT THE BOOK

The night that changed everything!

Waitress Darcy Penn is the smart, sensible type—flirting with the extremely cute guy in the bar just isn't her usual style. As for ending up in his hotel room? Definitely not! Sneaking out while he's in the bathroom to avoid the post-sex awkwardness? Much more like it….

If Darcy had stuck around, Jeff Norton could have told her about their "epic latex fail." So he shouldn't be quite so shocked when months later, Darcy turns up at his classy L.A. office and throws up in his wastepaper basket. She's got a bad case of morning sickness, and she's here to find out what he's going to do about it

REVIEW

I really liked this story, even if it was a bit predictable. Jeff and Darcy were both very likable and interesting, and it was fun to see them get together.

The writing was good, except the shift in POV was distracting. There was nothing the separated one section from another, so it was jarring when the POV flipped and it took me a second to figure out who was talking. The plot was a little too perfect, but if you enjoy other Harlequin Kiss books, you will love this one.

Book Review Blackjack and Moonlight by Magdalen Braden

ABOUT THE BOOK

A super-sexy judge has to declare his love for the lawyer of his dreams before he’s even met her.

Jack “Blackjack” McIntyre, Philly’s superhero judge, meets his match when Elise Carroll appears. Trouble is, she’s a lawyer in his courtroom. Stating his feelings for the court record isn’t the way to start a relationship… particularly with a woman who thinks “love at first sight” is as real as the tooth fairy.

Elise wants nothing to do with Blackjack’s potent charm and alleged romantic feelings. Still, men leave when they’ve gotten what they want… and they all want sex. So she offers to skip the candlelit dinners and go straight upstairs to unwrap him like a birthday present.

Jack and Elise negotiate a deal—they’ll alternate his romantic dates with her “sex only” dates. The contract works… until both of them get more than they bargained for. As Jack puts it, “falling in love isn’t for the faint of heart!” Can two legal eagles make this relationship work?

REVIEW

I don't even have the words to describe how much I loved this book. The characters were smart and funny and easy to fall in love with and relate to. Magdalen Braden does a great job of crafting a story that at first seems absurd, but quickly sucks the reader in and becomes easily believable. I have never read the previous two books (but absolutely will be now!), and this was easily read as a standalone.

OVERALL RATING - 5 STARS!
MATURITY RATING - 18+ a little steamy

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In her series of sexy contemporary romances, The Blackjack Quartet, Magdalen Braden writes about lawyers, judges, law students, paralegals … an entire fictional Philadelphia legal community, in fact. Hey, she left her legal career to return to her first love, romance writing, so it makes sense she'd write about the law. As she puts it, "I needed a day job to quit, so I went to law school."

Be glad she doesn't draw on her other professional experiences, which include failed caterer, failed daycare administrator, failed editorial assistant, and failed hearing tester in a flour mill.

Magdalen writes about Philadelphia because she went to law school there, practiced there, and even has a British patent attorney ex-husband still living in the Victorian South Philadelphia house Magdalen bought before they married. (The house used to be part of a convent—another aspect of her past that won't show up in her steamy novels.)

In a shameless bid for attention, Magdalen has been known to tell people she and bestselling author Julie James have virtually identical legal careers: Magdalen went to a better law school but Julie had the better federal clerkship.

In addition to writing, Magdalen keeps busy completing her Masters in Fine Arts degree from Stonecoast, the University of Southern Maine's MFA program, one of only two in the country that acknowledges romance novels exist, let alone comprise a wildly popular fiction genre. She even submitted a scholarly essay on Susan Elizabeth Phillips' "Dream a Little Dream" in her first semester. What time Magdalen has left over is spent with her second British husband (what can she say? She has a type!) in their two-hundred-year-old house in rural Pennsylvania with their cats and dog.

Magdalen's debut romance, "Love in Reality", begins The Blackjack Quartet. Book three in the series, "Blackjack & Moonlight", was a 2012 finalist in the prestigious Romance Writers of America Golden Heart® contest and will be published in 2013 after "The Cost of Happiness" (Book Two) and before "Lost and Found" (Book Four). There are rumors she's even considering a fifth book in the series.

Figures a former lawyer would try to sell a fifth book as part of a quartet …

Book Review - Another New Life by Sydney Aaliya Michelle

Title: Another New Life
Author: Sydney Aaliyah Michelle
New Adult Contemporary Romance
**This book contains adult subject matter. Not intended for young readers.**

Miranda Preston is a walking contradiction. Beautiful on the outside, but, insecure, haunted and damaged on the inside. Despite these contradictions, she’s ready to start Another New Life.

When her talent wins her a piano scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, Miranda arrives on campus determined to experience everything college has to offer and to keep her secrets in the past where they belong.
An easy task, until the first guy who catches her eye happens to be someone, she’s known all her life.

Eight years have passed since the last time Miranda and Troy saw each other. He reminds her of the best and worst times of her life, but she can’t think about one without dwelling on the other. As they grow closer, every day their attraction reminds them they are no longer kids.

The epic romantic love story that is Miranda and Troy seems to be destined for a happy ending, but Miranda knows it's only a matter of time before her secret is discovered. A secret that will not only destroy their relationship, it will destroy Troy, too.

Can Miranda focus on her future with Troy while preventing her past from tearing them apart all over again?

REVIEW

Another New Life was a great read.  The author did a good job of pacing the story so that all the cards weren’t on the table up front, but as a reader it didn’t feel like things were intentionally held back, instead it feels like the natural progression of when the characters would be forced to confront the information they were trying to block.
Epic romance is a good term to describe the connection between Miranda and Troy.  The connection never feels forced and is refreshingly shown and not just told.

There are parts of this book that are difficult to read, and may not be okay for readers with a history of abuse, but otherwise I’d recommend it for anyone who loves a good epic love story and stories about overcoming obstacles in the past and present to move on with your life.

4.5 Stars! - 18 + due to adult situations; a little steamy

Book Review and Tour - The Scandalous Love of a Duke by Jane Lark

Synopsis

Book three in Jane Lark's Kindle best-selling Regency romance series! Isolated by life and choice, John Harding, the Duke of Pembroke, sees an angel in a pale mauve dress across a room and is drawn closer as lust grips firm and hard in his stomach. The wheat-blonde hair escaping her dull dove-grey bonnet and caressing her neck lures his eyes to a spot he'd like to kiss. She speaks with animation her hands moving. Then as if she senses his gaze the stranger turns and looks at him. A rush of pain and longing spilled from Katherine's heart into her limbs. It was so long since she'd seen John but her reaction was the same as it had been more than half-a-dozen years before. She loved him, secretly, without hope, but a chasm of years and status stood between them.

Excerpt

A glass of red wine balanced in one hand, the stem dangling between his fingers, he joined another group of guests, fulfilling his duty. He trusted no one here. God, this was his life now, duty and falsehood. He missed Egypt, he missed adventure and peace and simplicity. He was already bored with people’s endless supplication. Everyone seemed to want something from him. They sought to attach themselves to either his wealth or his power. His grandfather had warned of this. John had had enough. He was seeking his family to escape it for a little while, and looking for Mary particularly. He knew his vibrant sister would bring him back from the cold darkness crowding in on him. He’d passed his mother and Edward in the hall, they’d been speaking with Richard and Penny, they’d directed him in here. His gaze swept about the room then stopped. There was a young woman standing amidst his family, like a blonde beacon of light amongst his dark-haired black-clad cousins. She was an angel in a pale mauve dress. Lust gripped had and firm in his stomach, an intense physical attraction. He’d never experienced anything so instant before. But it was a long time since he’d bedded a woman – far too long. Her figure was a sublime balance of curves and narrow waist. Her spine had a beautiful arch as it curved into the point where her dress opened onto a full skirt. Wheat-blonde hair escaped a dull dove-grey bonnet, caressing her neck and drawing his eyes to a place he’d like to kiss. She was speaking with animation her hands moving. He moved closer and as if she sensed his gaze the stranger turned and looked at him. In answer a lightning need struck his groin, a sharp sudden pain. She was an English Rose among orchids, the sort of woman he had seen nothing of abroad. Her skin was pale, with roses blooming in her cheeks, and her eyes were a vivid beautiful blue, like the bluebells which bloomed in spring, in the woods at Pembroke Place. She was what he had longed for abroad and not even known he’d been lacking. His attention wholly captured, desire slipped into his blood as his groin grew heavy with hunger. This was what came from abstinence he supposed. He’d never had a fancy for fair, fay women before. He did now. She did not look the sort for a fling though, certainly not the she-wolf type who stalked the foreign fields. His mind began rattling through his guest list, but no name fit her, and her dull grey bonnet and shawl did not speak of affluence. Who was she? He smiled as he grew nearer, then realised he was staring and shifted his gaze to the others in the group. It was then he noticed Phillip as they turned to towards him. “My God.” “Your Grace.” “Phillip.” Lord, John hoped Phillip had not come here with a motive. John did not wish to hear oily grovelling from an old friend. His heart thumped in cold anger, not gladness. Then he looked at the blonde and his breath caught as recognition whispered in his head. Kate.

Review

The Scandalous Love of a Duke is a great new installment to her Marlow Intrigues series.  It was nice seeing the characters from the previous books a generation later.  John is now grown up and forced to take on his Grandfather’s title of Duke.  Due to the rocky childhood we had already seen in previous books – which are not necessary to read before this one, as it is adequately represented in this text – he isn’t comfortable taking on the role he has been groomed for and takes it on reluctantly.
Lark does a good job of showing John’s reluctance to take on this role, but having read the previous books I didn’t feel that his actions fit with his personality in previous books.  I didn’t get the impression in the previous books that he was all that unhappy with his life once he was living with his Mom, and this book makes it seem like he was always unhappy.  I think the distance he felt from his much younger siblings was accurately portrayed, but I think the distance from his Mom and Step-father hadn’t been present in the previous books.

The romance between the characters was well done and felt realistic.  I liked John and Katherine as a couple, and felt their character growth was well written.  I recommend this book for anyone who likes a good historical romance.

When she finally completed a novel it was because she was determined not to reach forty still saying, I want to write. Now Jane is writing a Regency series and contemporary, new adult, stories and she is thrilled to be giving her characters life in others' imaginations at last. You might think that Jane was inspired to write by Jane Austen, especially as she lives near Bath in the United Kingdom, but you would be wrong. Jane's favourite author is Anya Seton, and the book which drew her into the bliss of falling into historical imagination was 'Katherine' a story crafted from reality. Jane has drawn on this inspiration to discover other real-life love stories, reading memoirs and letters to capture elements of the past, and she uses them to create more realistic plots.
